Last night proved to be a bit of a trying experience for me. As is often the case, bloggers don’t get the same treatment that mainstream media gets, and our efforts to secure the implosion of The New Frontier here in Las Vegas last night was met with some typical but ultimately funny run-ins with Las Vegas Metro. This guy told me he could not say “officially” that it was okay to walk down the closed-off Desert Inn arterial to film the implosion from what was a good vantage point (well out of the way and behind lots of television crews below us on the ground, as well as construction/demolition workers and onlookers behind a fence.) He said that it was sort of a at-your-own-risk/knowing what is safe for you ...

Dudes in costumes playing Magic the Gathering. Jesus I’m stoked. All kidding aside, starting this Friday and running through Sunday, the 2007 Las Vegas Renaissance Festival is going on at Sunset Park. It’s $10 per person per day or $25 if you’re bored and have the stamina and/or will to go for all three days. Coincidentally, we’re in preparations to start our new Las Vegas video podcast and will be out at at the festival on Friday shooting some film, probably eating turkey legs, and most definitely drinking beer. To actually make the day fun, in the spirit of The Three Musketeers (the movie,) we’re going wenching! Look for our camera crew in the park and come entertain our readers. Viewer participation is strongly encouraged!

Wow. Who the hell would want to be inside? I just got back from dinner about thirty minutes ago and of all the reasons why I call Las Vegas home, the air out here – tonight – is high up on the list. As I recently wrote, “Magical Weather Week” changes everything around here, weather-wise. The highs this week are the very low nineties, which might sound hot, but for the dry air, it’s great. You are still comfortable enough outside to go to the pool all day and then as the sun goes down, you just want to change into some jeans and stay outside.. goof around on your laptop on the Internet (if you’ve got Wi-Fi kicking and stuff.) Later this week I’ve got a big crew of ...

Las Vegas’ “Magical Weather Week” is a term I coined a few years back to describe this process that happens usually the second week of September or so where the weather just suddenly changes from summer hot to absolutely perfect. The daytime heat doesn’t get so hot; the warm nights begin to get more mild. It doesn’t happen gradually over a month or so. It happens suddenly – magically. Where I was born and grew up it was not unheard of to be wearing shorts on Christmas Day. It stayed super humid and hot until well into October, usually, and there were pretty much two seasons: 1) hot and oppressively humid and 2) cold and wet. Las Vegas truly has four seasons. Because it’s paradise, the two best seasons for ...

I was sitting here in my living room, replying to some emails and catching up on a few things online when I heard it: the sweet, violent, glorious sound of thunder! I’ve written before about how the one thing I miss about living where I grew up in Texas is the weather. There is something so amazing and so emotionally invigorating about thunderstorms to me. Serious rains storms make me feel so relaxed and so at peace… You just don’t get a lot of them here in the desert. When it does rain, though, it makes it all the more a treat for me. Just a few minutes back I heard thunder. I went to the front door to look outside and apparently this place is insulated very, very well ...

Okay, it’s true: I don’t believe in luck. Big time superstitions – even small, insidious ones – can be the undoing of any gambler, but mostly, I have always been big on mathematics and science and not so much on defying the inevitable. The law of large numbers is on your side, so long as you’re gambling with an edge. I’ve seen that principle in practice so many times, if I have a “belief,” it’s in the math. There are some very troubling mathematics and probability issues surrounding marriage today. Well, it’s not a new problem, but it seems to be a very consistent one – I’m sure that everyone has the same impression about marriage, more or less: the odds of any marriage working out for the long term ...

Fear the electric bill this month! I’m sitting in the cool, comfortable confines of my house, enjoying a refreshing and reinvigorating 69 degrees of glorious, god-given air conditioning. Outside it’s a crushing 117 degrees of dry heat, so dry and so heated, in fact, that yesterday when I went to turn on my wipers and squirt some water to clear away a bit of dust on the windshield, there was literally a little thin trail of rubber left behind on the glass around where the edge of the wiper blade had passed. No, I am not kidding. I’m not allowing myself to consider the ecological impact of cooling my personal shelter to a differential of 48 degrees from the outside air, because well, I gotta have it cool, baby! Somewhere ...

Heidi Fleiss, the famous (or infamous, if you prefer; I prefer the former) Hollywood madam-to-the-stars who was convicted in 1995 for tax evasion (the pandering charges were dropped, as I understand it,) has branched out into the greater Las Vegas area, having moved to Pahrump, Nevada about a year ago. During that time the media now and again makes reference to her plans to purchase and convert a Las Vegas brothel in the Pahrump Valley into Nevada’s first male brothel for women, aptly to be named “Heidi’s Stud Farm…” For various reasons of which I do not have the details, those plans seem to be on temporary hold. A girl has to keep herself busy in the meantime while the attorneys work out the nit-picky details and the community warms ...

That’s right…. Our personal, Las Vegas driver, VIP style. Okay, well as VIP as you can be in a taxicab How does one go about ending up a cab driver?
Starting tomorrow, I’m going to begin a series of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” that will just sort of happen upon occasion, most likely after I’ve recently visited one of the places I will have written about. I’ve been meaning to do this for some time but I am going to make an effort to do so effective immediately. Las Vegas, Nevada is a lot things. It’s obviously the gaming capital of the world and that is just about all that most people know about Las Vegas. That definitely does influence most everything in the town to some degree, what with so many movie theaters or restaurants inside of casinos or shopping adjoining the resorts in their smaller, more upscale malls. All the local bars, of course, have gaming ...

It’s been some peculiar weather America has been experiencing, in general, as of late. Late season snow storms in the northern Midwest, unexpected cool, mild nights out here in the desert, and now, on the turn of a single week, summer has arrived in full effect a little early. It was literally ten days ago that I was writing about just how wonderfully mild it has been out here when it would normally be warming up a little bit. What a change a week makes.! The middle and latter parts of this week have been seeing us hit the 106, 107 degree range, which, granted is not record breaking for Las Vegas by any stretching of the imagination overall, but with a an average thirty year daily average high for ...

Normally this time of year we’re averaging some pretty warm daily temperatures with very pleasant cool-downs in the evening. The last two days have had us experiencing some weird wind patterns that are more common in March and April, not still in June. It’s been really dusty – yesterday was a straight-up dust storm. Billboard signs had been torn or ripped off on signs all over and dust and debris was collecting in weird places. Like most things out here in Las Vegas, though, there’s almost always an upside…. Today the high was like 79 or 80 degrees, clear blue skies, and a promise for a low tonight around 60. It’s like Spring time all over again! Loving it!! In other news, the last two weeks posting has been very ...

It’s never lost on me; it never gets old. The place I call home has to have the most fantastic weather of any major city on earth. I grew up in South Texas. Since most of my family and a ton of friends are there, it’s home to me(okay, not my new home, but it still gets credit,) and there are elements of the weather there that I do miss. Okay, there is one: thunderstorms. I really miss that awesome, violent, beautiful Southern thunderstorm weather. It scares some people, particularly kids. When I was a kid it made me wish it would never be over. I loved it. I’ve always found it relaxing, invigorating. Apart from the storms and rain, it gets hot in Texas, but not hot like it is ...

It only took the feds 21 years, but they’ve finally gotten at least one plea of guilty in the killings of two Chicago Outfit mafia members. These guys were made famous, albeit with names changed, in the hit movie “Casino” by Martin Scorsese. Tony “the ant” Spilotro is the real name of the character played by Joe Pesci in the film. He and his brother (Michael Spilotro in real life) were both beaten to death and buried in a field in Indiana, if you recall from watching the movie – that event in the film was factual. I’ve read the book “Casino” by Nicholas Pileggi and it is a work of non-fiction, changing no names and telling the story in its entirety. It’s an intriguing story from a fascinating time ...

I realize that vengeance is not a emotional drive one should attempt to exude upon inanimate objects. Okay, well, this object isn’t 100% completely inanimate to start with, and to be honest, I think it might have developed enough artificial intelligence to make this battle, nay, war, personal. I eat my last meal of the day at odd hours. Sometimes midnightish, sometimes 3 or 4am… Las Vegas has tons and tons of restaurants but the good ones tend to close by 11pm or so, maybe midnight on the weekends. One place that I enjoy eating at fairly regularly is Grand Luxe Cafe, which is inside the Venetian. They have a pretty wide selection of menu items, all of above-average quality and they are open 24 hours a day, at least ...
