Last night proved to be a bit of a trying experience for me. As is often the case, bloggers don’t get the same treatment that mainstream media gets, and our efforts to secure the implosion of The New Frontier here in Las Vegas last night was met with some typical but ultimately funny run-ins with Las Vegas Metro. This guy told me he could not say “officially” that it was okay to walk down the closed-off Desert Inn arterial to film the implosion from what was a good vantage point (well out of the way and behind lots of television crews below us on the ground, as well as construction/demolition workers and onlookers behind a fence.) He said that it was sort of a at-your-own-risk/knowing what is safe for you ...

Las Vegas’ “Magical Weather Week” is a term I coined a few years back to describe this process that happens usually the second week of September or so where the weather just suddenly changes from summer hot to absolutely perfect. The daytime heat doesn’t get so hot; the warm nights begin to get more mild. It doesn’t happen gradually over a month or so. It happens suddenly – magically. Where I was born and grew up it was not unheard of to be wearing shorts on Christmas Day. It stayed super humid and hot until well into October, usually, and there were pretty much two seasons: 1) hot and oppressively humid and 2) cold and wet. Las Vegas truly has four seasons. Because it’s paradise, the two best seasons for ...

I was sitting here in my living room, replying to some emails and catching up on a few things online when I heard it: the sweet, violent, glorious sound of thunder! I’ve written before about how the one thing I miss about living where I grew up in Texas is the weather. There is something so amazing and so emotionally invigorating about thunderstorms to me. Serious rains storms make me feel so relaxed and so at peace… You just don’t get a lot of them here in the desert. When it does rain, though, it makes it all the more a treat for me. Just a few minutes back I heard thunder. I went to the front door to look outside and apparently this place is insulated very, very well ...

It’s been a couple of years now since I heard the early rumors of a very, very tall building project for Las Vegas being proposed by an Australian billionaire developer. It was being talked about around the same time that Ivana Trump announced her super-tall building on the property at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara. In fact, it was at a time when it seemed like all you heard on the news was the latest and greatest imaginings of super-wealthy developers for Las Vegas and the impending “Manhattanization” of our fair city. They even have a web domain and “magazine” devoted to it, though I’ve never seen it anywhere.. Well, Ivana’s project fell apart (after getting FAA approval for a very tall tower) but Donald’s is almost ...

Being a hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool poker player at heart myself, of the stories I’ve heard come out of the World Series of Poker this year, there is only one that speaks of pure dedication to such a noble cause as the game of life we know as “poker” and could earn my vote for Poker Player of the Year… Paul Clark’s story. Here is a guy – a professional player – who takes the game so seriously that while he’s in competition for the title of Razz World Champion – final table, no less – has suffered multiple mini-strokes and refuses to leave the game to seek medical treatment. I’ve only heard similar tales dating back to the old school road gambler days… like way back there to the times of ...

It’s all about the ponies. That’s all I’m saying! Last night Bravo, Nick the Cabbie, and myself went out to do a little gambling at the New Frontier on it’s last night as an operating casino. It was fun! You know it’s funny how when you live in this town you can forget how much fun it can be to just go to an old casino with a couple of friends and roam around laughing while you pump “silver dollars” into a machine like they have no value. Okay, well they are made of aluminum and aren’t legal tender making them literally worthless in of themselves, but you can cash them in for the real thing! And besides, it’s really easy to forget how much fun that is when so ...

One issue that has always been of first-order importance to me – my whole life, in fact – has been that of first amendment protections of free speech and a free press. I personally feel that it’s better to err on the side of inconvenience or even discomfort for the masses in the interest of protecting free speech, however inflammatory or salacious it might be. In the end, I believe that even the most horrific ideas being voiced publicly will serve only to incriminate the speaker by putting a spotlight on ill thoughts and agendas. It’s those sneaky types who say one thing in public but have a very different actual agenda they are planning to put forward that you really have to worry about.. And they never say what ...

Okay, it’s true: I don’t believe in luck. Big time superstitions – even small, insidious ones – can be the undoing of any gambler, but mostly, I have always been big on mathematics and science and not so much on defying the inevitable. The law of large numbers is on your side, so long as you’re gambling with an edge. I’ve seen that principle in practice so many times, if I have a “belief,” it’s in the math. There are some very troubling mathematics and probability issues surrounding marriage today. Well, it’s not a new problem, but it seems to be a very consistent one – I’m sure that everyone has the same impression about marriage, more or less: the odds of any marriage working out for the long term ...

Fear the electric bill this month! I’m sitting in the cool, comfortable confines of my house, enjoying a refreshing and reinvigorating 69 degrees of glorious, god-given air conditioning. Outside it’s a crushing 117 degrees of dry heat, so dry and so heated, in fact, that yesterday when I went to turn on my wipers and squirt some water to clear away a bit of dust on the windshield, there was literally a little thin trail of rubber left behind on the glass around where the edge of the wiper blade had passed. No, I am not kidding. I’m not allowing myself to consider the ecological impact of cooling my personal shelter to a differential of 48 degrees from the outside air, because well, I gotta have it cool, baby!
Heidi Fleiss, the famous (or infamous, if you prefer; I prefer the former) Hollywood madam-to-the-stars who was convicted in 1995 for tax evasion (the pandering charges were dropped, as I understand it,) has branched out into the greater Las Vegas area, having moved to Pahrump, Nevada about a year ago. During that time the media now and again makes reference to her plans to purchase and convert a Las Vegas brothel in the Pahrump Valley into Nevada’s first male brothel for women, aptly to be named “Heidi’s Stud Farm…” For various reasons of which I do not have the details, those plans seem to be on temporary hold. A girl has to keep herself busy in the meantime while the attorneys work out the nit-picky details and the community warms ...

It’s been some peculiar weather America has been experiencing, in general, as of late. Late season snow storms in the northern Midwest, unexpected cool, mild nights out here in the desert, and now, on the turn of a single week, summer has arrived in full effect a little early. It was literally ten days ago that I was writing about just how wonderfully mild it has been out here when it would normally be warming up a little bit. What a change a week makes.! The middle and latter parts of this week have been seeing us hit the 106, 107 degree range, which, granted is not record breaking for Las Vegas by any stretching of the imagination overall, but with a an average thirty year daily average high for ...

It only took the feds 21 years, but they’ve finally gotten at least one plea of guilty in the killings of two Chicago Outfit mafia members. These guys were made famous, albeit with names changed, in the hit movie “Casino” by Martin Scorsese. Tony “the ant” Spilotro is the real name of the character played by Joe Pesci in the film. He and his brother (Michael Spilotro in real life) were both beaten to death and buried in a field in Indiana, if you recall from watching the movie – that event in the film was factual. I’ve read the book “Casino” by Nicholas Pileggi and it is a work of non-fiction, changing no names and telling the story in its entirety. It’s an intriguing story from a fascinating time ...

For many months now, there has a been a “controversy” in the local media. No, it hasn’t been the ill treatment of Las Vegas’ homeless population – that one lost it’s appeal back in the fall. It hasn’t been a number of other thought-provoking, socially-conscious issues that are very active in our community and should be taking up space in the local news – issues that should remain in focus until workable solutions to the problems are found and decisive actions are taken… Oh, no, not those issues… We’re [still] talking about the flight path for departures out of McCarran International Airport. Seriously important, life-changing stuff. For those of your who do not know what this about, allow me to bring you up to speed… McCarran International Airport, the primary ...

There are some strange things that happen in our fair city – Mayors telling school kids his favorite pastime is drinking gin, hookers forming unions, holes in the desert – you name it, we’ve either had it, got it, or will probably get it before long. One thing I have not seen yet is Las Vegas Boulevard being used as a runway… Last night, we had some very typical (for this time of year) strong, gusty winds around the valley. Being a private (student) pilot, myself, I’m always watching the planes come and go as I go about my day or night around town. Jets on approach into McCarran International Airport last night were coming in on the southwestern approach and had a pretty strong, quartering headwind out of the ...

My friend Christopher Nolan has said some funny stuff about Michael Jackson in the past, what with all of his seemingly out-of-this-world ideas, eccentricities, et cetera (to say nothing about allowing himself to be too close to scandals and people taking pop-shots at him because he’s an easy target.) In a funny-serious sounding voice, he’ll posit in the form of a question, “What’s wrong with Mikie???“ It’s true that some of the stories we’ve all heard Michael Jackson has been associated with over the years are just, well, a bit out there… Like the oxygen tank he used to sleep in. Or his partner in crime who happened to be a chimpanzee. Or the amusement park he lives in.. With zoo animals wandering all around… This latest idea from the ...
