There’s some guy waving frantically at all the cabs driving in front of the Gold Coast. It must be some sort of emergency. Despite the urgency of his flailing, I’m almost past him by the time I notice and I have no doubt that one of the other cabs will pick him up before I can turn around. The light takes forever and when he comes back into view I start to think that maybe there is some reason that none of the other drivers want to pick him up. I raise my heightened alert status even further when he does some kind of crazy taxi victory dance, but then I see the rest of his group and scale it back down. I know that sometimes one cute girl will ...

A lot of people have complained over the past couple of years that Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport does not have free Wi-Fi connections for laptops computers, iPods and iPhones, et cetera. I’ve personally felt a bit nonplussed about these gripes, because while a few airports do offer free Wi-Fi connections, many, many airports around the world charge, and charge through the nose, at that. Las Vegas is a world class city catering to a very international clientele so it definitely makes sense for them to open up the wi-fi connections to everyone for their use for free. Well, I’m not sure when it happened, but I’m currently writing from McCarran Airport via the airport’s free wifi system. Cheers to the powers that be! It’s just one more little ...

I screwed up last year. I slept on an opportunity to join a kickball team with some friends (some of which have since moved out of Vegas, as people tend to do, sometimes.) This year I didn’t hear anything about the league starting up amongst friends so, naturally, I did nothing. For some, adults playing kickball might seem like a silly diversion from life in Sin City. Well, pfffft to that shit. Kickball was the second best physical education sport in school, second only to Dodgeball. Now, it’s true that Kickball doesn’t have the genius marketing team of Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller on their side – “If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball…” – but what Kickball lacks in marketing it makes up for with ...

See, the thing is, on Sundays nail salons, hair salons, and those sorts of service-oriented businesses tend to close early, usually by five or six p.m. I’m leaving on Tuesday and tomorrow is going to be crazy enough already, and, well, my feet need to be all they can be.
When most people hear the phrase “monsoon season” they think of the famously rainy monsoons of India that they learned about in school. What’s really odd to me is how they always teach about “monsoons” in the context of some very foreign place to North America – there are monsoonal weather patterns every single year right here in the Southwest to learn about. I know that kids can “get” an illustration of a concept by examples of extremes – and it definitely rains like crazy in India during monsoon season, oftentimes causing flooding, et cetera – but those conditions, while perhaps not as widespread and extreme, occur right here in Las Vegas, Nevada, and much of the desert southwest. So what is a monsoon, you ask? It’s really just a ...

When they finally get to the taxi it is immediately apparent that this is the most unusual group of people that I’ve ever driven around: the original yelling man looks kind of like Kyle McLachlan …if he was on a diet consisting entirely of cheese. The woman that he lets into the front seat between us looks exactly like Mama Fratelli from the Goonies, and the beefy, high-school football player-looking guy that gets into the back, is apparently her son.
Last night I was at Bucks #1 and the adjoining Kinkos, drinking my ritual coffee and taking care of some printing stuff I had to do. I saw a sign on the door of the Starbucks saying they would be closed tomorrow (today) from 5:30-9:30pm. I was a little dismayed because I’m always in that area and get one to two coffee drinks there daily (or nightly, as it were, because that’s when I’m out on the prowl.) Yes, the Starbucks on Paradise Road in Las Vegas near Flamingo is my regular caffeine dealer! My C hook-up, baby… You know you got one too! Early tonight I got a text message from Nick the Las Vegas Cabbie. He was freaked out saying, “Starbucks is closed! I’m going to die!” I ...

I got pulled over – Liz did, actually, I was in the passenger seat – and this cop that was probably eight or ten years younger than I am asked every invasive, rude question he could think of that was irrelevant to why he claimed he pulled us over – a broken light on her license plate. He asked if either of us had ever been “in trouble,” where we were going, where we were coming from, how we know each other, why our driver’s license numbers are so similar, why our address is 7777 something – sounds fishy – ...

I Las Vegas, with so many, uh, different sorts of occupations, there exists a market to reach out to these “service industry” people and provide solid, legitimate, financial planning, legal, and tax preparation services. We don’t discriminate in our fair city. We embrace! You see a hooker – we see an upwardly-mobile young professional making over $1000 per day and in need of some serious tax and financial advice! Take the photo here, for example, which was taken off of Industrial Road near the Can Can Room, an old school strip club: The age old axiom of “death and taxes” applies to everyone, including Las Vegas’ working girls.

Only in Las Vegas, Nevada, would you see a man’s privates in public before dinnertime, and if you did happen to see said man’s now public privates, there’s a good chance it would be on Tropicana Boulevard. A few weeks ago I was driving down Tropicana from the office of a service that offers “strippers to your room” when on the opposite side of the road, I saw a man in his fifties with only sweatpants on and his shirt laying on the ground. Reluctantly standing next to this guy was a man who picks up the trash for the Wild Wild West Casino and Truck Stop who was trying to do his job of emptying out the trash barrels along the road and parking lot of the property. He ...

The holidays really have had me missing in action ’round here. I spent three weeks in Texas during Christmas. I was back for one week and then I was gone again for another eight or nine days on my big ski trip. Now I am back and can continue the big project to rebuild this site from the ground up, which we’ve been working on for several months now. WordPress, the underlying software that the site runs on, has undergone some fundamental changes in the way it handles site architecture, categories, tags, and that sort of thing. They’ve renamed and reorganized the way the software works, so I’ve had to back-peddle a bit and get our categories and tags sorted out. Now that that is done we’re going to begin ...
