police-comfortInstead of getting in my cab, this guy walks around to my window and says, “Can you get me to the airport in ten minutes?”

I quickly consider a multitude of factors like (A) where I am,1 (B) which route I will take,2 (C) how long it normally takes from here,3 (D) what day it is,4 (E) what time it is,5 (F) how much traffic will there be,6 (G) how much I want this ride,7 (H) what I need to say to get it,8 (I) what will happen if I take longer than ten minutes,9 (J) how big my tip will be if I miraculously get him there in time,10 (K) what are the most important details of this story that I may forget to mention,11 and (L) which trenchant author I will need to rip off when I finally write this down.12

It’s still dark when I pick up the three guys from the Hard Rock Casino, but I can tell that the sun is not far away. They tell me to drive towards the MGM, but it isn’t clear if this will be the actual destination. I discover that they recently met at Body English and have been there drinking and having fun all night.

Curiously, the guy with the thick German accent in the front seat looks like he just got ready to go out…except he decided to put on the clothes from the day before.

There’s some guy waving frantically at all the cabs driving in front of the Gold Coast. It must be some sort of emergency. Despite the urgency of his flailing, I’m almost past him by the time I notice and I have no doubt that one of the other cabs will pick him up before I can turn around. The light takes forever and when he comes back into view I start to think that maybe there is some reason that none of the other drivers want to pick him up. I raise my heightened alert status even further when he does some kind of crazy taxi victory dance

Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport Now Has Free Wi-Fi

A lot of people have complained over the past couple of years that Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport does not have free Wi-Fi connections for laptops computers, iPods and iPhones, et cetera.  I’ve personally felt a bit nonplussed about these gripes, because while a few airports do offer free Wi-Fi connections, many, many airports around the world charge, and charge through the nose, at that.
