For years I’ve enjoyed Downtown Las Vegas in a way that I think is lost on a lot of people. I actually have always kind of dug the old, kitschy vibe, the stuff with a little history, the stuff with a little character (and a lot of characters, at that…) I like walking into casinos (at least the clean ones, anyways) that have low ceilings with antique lighting fixtures and wood paneling – cashier’s cages with cute little brass bars. It’s sort of like the Old West. Do I go down there all the time? No, of course not. Do I feel a sense a security knowing that at least some things never change? Hell yes. …But things change. Nowhere do things change as often or as quickly as they ...

Okay, granted, I’m big on free food and even bigger on free liquor, but Light Group knows how to launch a new club, er, uh, bar… taqueria?!@#$? It’s more than just a Mexican food restaurant, for sure, but at the end of the day, it’s a restaurant and bar. You would have thought it was the next big thing – like Tao 2.0 or something – pretty funny, actually. For the record, I think all future openings in Las Vegas should also feature red devils on red carpets! To be honest, we almost didn’t make it to the opening. Okay, to be precise we almost didn’t make into the opening – we made it there and for some reason the guest list which I’d been on for several days with ...

My girlfriend is a happy, satisfied subscriber to Playboy Magazine. Like me, she’s a photographer. Also like me, she’s a fan of naked women. She says she reads it for the articles, though… so who knows? Anyhow, on Friday she received her new issue of Playboy Magazine and was pleasantly surprised to see a cute girl in an old school Playboy Bunny outfit on the cover, complete with ears and a bow tie. Last fall, almost exactly a year ago, in fact, Playboy and The Palms opened the new Fantasy Tower, complete with the first Playboy Club to open in twenty-five years. As I recall, they had casting calls ongoing for quite awhile with ads in the local papers and magazines. Las Vegas is home to a very high concentration ...

It’s been a couple of years now since I heard the early rumors of a very, very tall building project for Las Vegas being proposed by an Australian billionaire developer. It was being talked about around the same time that Ivana Trump announced her super-tall building on the property at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara. In fact, it was at a time when it seemed like all you heard on the news was the latest and greatest imaginings of super-wealthy developers for Las Vegas and the impending “Manhattanization” of our fair city. They even have a web domain and “magazine” devoted to it, though I’ve never seen it anywhere.. Well, Ivana’s project fell apart (after getting FAA approval for a very tall tower) but Donald’s is almost ...

Being a hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool poker player at heart myself, of the stories I’ve heard come out of the World Series of Poker this year, there is only one that speaks of pure dedication to such a noble cause as the game of life we know as “poker” and could earn my vote for Poker Player of the Year… Paul Clark’s story. Here is a guy – a professional player – who takes the game so seriously that while he’s in competition for the title of Razz World Champion – final table, no less – has suffered multiple mini-strokes and refuses to leave the game to seek medical treatment. I’ve only heard similar tales dating back to the old school road gambler days… like way back there to the times of ...

It’s all about the ponies. That’s all I’m saying! Last night Bravo, Nick the Cabbie, and myself went out to do a little gambling at the New Frontier on it’s last night as an operating casino. It was fun! You know it’s funny how when you live in this town you can forget how much fun it can be to just go to an old casino with a couple of friends and roam around laughing while you pump “silver dollars” into a machine like they have no value. Okay, well they are made of aluminum and aren’t legal tender making them literally worthless in of themselves, but you can cash them in for the real thing! And besides, it’s really easy to forget how much fun that is when so ...

One issue that has always been of first-order importance to me – my whole life, in fact – has been that of first amendment protections of free speech and a free press. I personally feel that it’s better to err on the side of inconvenience or even discomfort for the masses in the interest of protecting free speech, however inflammatory or salacious it might be. In the end, I believe that even the most horrific ideas being voiced publicly will serve only to incriminate the speaker by putting a spotlight on ill thoughts and agendas. It’s those sneaky types who say one thing in public but have a very different actual agenda they are planning to put forward that you really have to worry about.. And they never say what ...

Okay, it’s true: I don’t believe in luck. Big time superstitions – even small, insidious ones – can be the undoing of any gambler, but mostly, I have always been big on mathematics and science and not so much on defying the inevitable. The law of large numbers is on your side, so long as you’re gambling with an edge. I’ve seen that principle in practice so many times, if I have a “belief,” it’s in the math. There are some very troubling mathematics and probability issues surrounding marriage today. Well, it’s not a new problem, but it seems to be a very consistent one – I’m sure that everyone has the same impression about marriage, more or less: the odds of any marriage working out for the long term ...

I realize that vengeance is not a emotional drive one should attempt to exude upon inanimate objects. Okay, well, this object isn’t 100% completely inanimate to start with, and to be honest, I think it might have developed enough artificial intelligence to make this battle, nay, war, personal. I eat my last meal of the day at odd hours. Sometimes midnightish, sometimes 3 or 4am… Las Vegas has tons and tons of restaurants but the good ones tend to close by 11pm or so, maybe midnight on the weekends. One place that I enjoy eating at fairly regularly is Grand Luxe Cafe, which is inside the Venetian. They have a pretty wide selection of menu items, all of above-average quality and they are open 24 hours a day, at least ...

The changes at The Palms Hotel and Casino, with the exception of the new condominium tower, are now complete. The last change in the process was the completion and opening of The Pearl on Saturday night, featuring a live performance by Gwen Stefani and appearances by a number of celebrities. We’d promised some photos from the red carpet at the event. Unfortunately, the red carpet at this event was a staged area inside of the ballroom next to The Pearl and since we didn’t know that ahead of time we hadn’t requested proper press credentials, alas. At special celebrity events there in the past, such as CineVegas, the red carpet has been a very open affair. I’m sort of kicking my own ass for that one, but we did enjoy ...

There’s almost nothing as mind-numbing and seemingly time-wasting as hitting the gym in your complex to go play hamster-on-a-wheel for an hour trying to burn a few extra calories, not to me at least. My brain has a marvelous way of getting hyper-bored in blazingly fast fashion and the distractions seem limitless. I think about everything I haven’t done that day, what’s on television, where I’d rather be, who I’d rather be with, and, probably what I want for dinner. It’s just not really conducive to the task at hand. I can’t take the monotony. When we first moved to Las Vegas, like most tourists, we’d take off on the Strip and go see a few places. It didn’t take long for you to realize that a “city block” in ...

My friend Christopher Nolan has said some funny stuff about Michael Jackson in the past, what with all of his seemingly out-of-this-world ideas, eccentricities, et cetera (to say nothing about allowing himself to be too close to scandals and people taking pop-shots at him because he’s an easy target.) In a funny-serious sounding voice, he’ll posit in the form of a question, “What’s wrong with Mikie???“ It’s true that some of the stories we’ve all heard Michael Jackson has been associated with over the years are just, well, a bit out there… Like the oxygen tank he used to sleep in. Or his partner in crime who happened to be a chimpanzee. Or the amusement park he lives in.. With zoo animals wandering all around… This latest idea from the ...

Saturday night we met up with a couple of friends and went out dancing after hours. They’ve made a few changes at Drai’s recently. They’ve added a second area in the back of the club near the back bar that features hip hop. This makes for a much less crowded main dance floor as people tend to circulate more and some stay in the back that would normally be in the front. The hotel itself, formerly the Barbary Coast, as changed it’s name under new ownership to Bill’s Gambling Hall and Saloon (really went all out on that name, didn’t they?) They’ve changed some signage out but as far as I can tell that’s about all they have changed. I can’t help but think that this is not a long-range ...

The Stardust Hotel was imploded while I was out of the country in Europe, but Splice was able to get my camera and get out there in the middle of the night to shoot it from a good vantage point. When I first got home last week I was sick, thus the delay in getting the thing edited and ready to put on the site here, but I think you might find that it was worth the wait… This might very well be the best video of the implosion yet! Here’s why: This video has the entire demolition including: - the complete fireworks display - the countdown on the building - the implosion itself ** plus ** - the implosion in REVERSE - the implosion in SLOW MOTION! So check ...

The proverbial stops have been pulled. This might be the most decked-out I’ve seen Las Vegas since I moved here a little over three years ago. There are special bus wraps regarding the All-Star Game, many buildings have reprographic wraps on them, including, but not limited to Mandalay Bay, the Luxor, and MGM. The Lion in front of MGM and the Statue of Liberty in front of New York, New York are even wearing two-story tall East and West basketball jerseys. In typical Las Vegas “which way is north?” style, the MGM Lion is wearing West (on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard) and Lady Liberty (on the west side) is wearing East. The lion’s cute, though! It looks like his jersey is one of those onesie things little ...
