Last night proved to be a bit of a trying experience for me. As is often the case, bloggers don’t get the same treatment that mainstream media gets, and our efforts to secure the implosion of The New Frontier here in Las Vegas last night was met with some typical but ultimately funny run-ins with Las Vegas Metro. This guy told me he could not say “officially” that it was okay to walk down the closed-off Desert Inn arterial to film the implosion from what was a good vantage point (well out of the way and behind lots of television crews below us on the ground, as well as construction/demolition workers and onlookers behind a fence.) He said that it was sort of a at-your-own-risk/knowing what is safe for you ...

For years I’ve enjoyed Downtown Las Vegas in a way that I think is lost on a lot of people. I actually have always kind of dug the old, kitschy vibe, the stuff with a little history, the stuff with a little character (and a lot of characters, at that…) I like walking into casinos (at least the clean ones, anyways) that have low ceilings with antique lighting fixtures and wood paneling – cashier’s cages with cute little brass bars. It’s sort of like the Old West. Do I go down there all the time? No, of course not. Do I feel a sense a security knowing that at least some things never change? Hell yes. …But things change. Nowhere do things change as often or as quickly as they ...

Having been open for well over a month, last night I finally ventured out with my friend Christopher Nolan to LAX to take a look around Las Vegas’ newest superclub. I’ve heard good things, but I’ve been really busy as of late, and in general I tend to avoid club openings and the celebrity worshipping madness that takes place around such things. Most importantly, though, I really just enjoy partying at a club once it has a real solid weekly night of good music and dancing and has some recognizable faces in the crowd. These things take time, my friend… So anyhow we ventured out for a bit. There is a lot of construction still taking place at the Luxor, which rumor has it, by the way, might not be ...

Dudes in costumes playing Magic the Gathering. Jesus I’m stoked. All kidding aside, starting this Friday and running through Sunday, the 2007 Las Vegas Renaissance Festival is going on at Sunset Park. It’s $10 per person per day or $25 if you’re bored and have the stamina and/or will to go for all three days. Coincidentally, we’re in preparations to start our new Las Vegas video podcast and will be out at at the festival on Friday shooting some film, probably eating turkey legs, and most definitely drinking beer. To actually make the day fun, in the spirit of The Three Musketeers (the movie,) we’re going wenching! Look for our camera crew in the park and come entertain our readers. Viewer participation is strongly encouraged!

They should have called it Vertigo. Seriously. My whole life I’ve been a huge fan of amusement park rides – roller coasters, especially – and all of that sort of thing. I loved it so much so, in fact, that it’s particularly odd that I still have never ridden a ride here in Las Vegas – well, at least not until last weekend. That probably stems from my basic idea that Las Vegas is an adult playground and the whole Disneyfication thing from the early 90′s is still hanging around in a few very minor ways, including amusements that were originally designed to occupy the kids while Mom and Dad spent their college tuition funds at the craps table and slot machines. That having been said, roller coasters aren’t just ...

Being a stripper here in Las Vegas always has its perks, for sure. Sure, you make decent money while dancing for parties and what-have-you, but there are the other over-looked perks, too, such as becoming an expert previewer of every high-end hotel suite in Las Vegas! When you think about it, out-call strippers see more hotels than just about anyone else around! Last Saturday night was one good example of that… A good friend of mine gave me a heads up on a bachelor party who was asking for some girls to come by and dance at their room at the Palms Hotel. I got a second girl lined up to go with me and we made our way over to the Palms around 2am. The new Fantasy Tower there ...

I think I might should be ashamed to admit this, but I’ll admit it just the same: I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live in Las Vegas. Okay, I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live anywhere, but if I were to see him, it would almost definitely have to be here in our mutual hometown, Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve always sort of intended to go and catch his show but it seems like his schedule is a little unpredictable the last few years. He takes long breaks, it appears, then I’ll see billboards saying he’s doing his nightly show at the Flamingo again and I think “I really should go see that little slice of classic Vegas while it’s still available.” And then I get the news (again) – he’s ...

It’s all about the ponies. That’s all I’m saying! Last night Bravo, Nick the Cabbie, and myself went out to do a little gambling at the New Frontier on it’s last night as an operating casino. It was fun! You know it’s funny how when you live in this town you can forget how much fun it can be to just go to an old casino with a couple of friends and roam around laughing while you pump “silver dollars” into a machine like they have no value. Okay, well they are made of aluminum and aren’t legal tender making them literally worthless in of themselves, but you can cash them in for the real thing! And besides, it’s really easy to forget how much fun that is when so ...

Last night I was walking into Treasure Island from the parking garage when I happened upon what I believe to be a new discovery in the realm of insobriety-while-remaining-mobile. Naturally, if such a discovery were to be made, Las Vegas would be a prime breeding ground for a state of inebriation like this, due to the sheer volume of people that get unbelievably plastered beyond belief here each and every day. Before last night, even my seasoned, well-alcoholed, professional party person eyes had never seen such an amazing attempt to remain conscious after drinking what most definitely had to have been a heroic amount of ethanol. I’m talking about inebriation at a level that most any mere mortal would have long since been passed out in a bathroom stall somewhere… ...

That’s right. Pilot. He thinks “driving a cab” just doesn’t sound quite right so he looks at it as being a pilot. I kinda like that. Not only is he probably the best driver I know (and a great personal friend,) he’s available for his drunken, debauched friends when in need of a lift from Rehab or various other clubs around Las Vegas! That’s right…. Our personal, Las Vegas driver, VIP style. Okay, well as VIP as you can be in a taxicab How does one go about ending up a cab driver? Well, apparently a good way to start is being a screenwriter, because that’s what Nick is. In classic Hollywood mogul fashion, he has a half dozen or so scripts in various stages of production.. Being a great, ...

Last week my little nephew was in town visiting from Houston. He’s been coming out the last few summers to stay with me for a week or so and I always like to take him on a little trip. In the past we’ve gone camping up on Mount Charleston, gone to Disneyland and the Santa Monica beach.. that sort of thing. This time I thought we’d go up to a place I’ve wanted to visit for a number of years and never got around to going to for whatever reason, a place a little Cub Scout could definitely appreciate – Zion Canyon National Park. Zion Canyon, obviously renamed to its current moniker by religious folk, has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. It’s a truly beautiful area to ...

Places you go in life are just places until something happens there. After that the place is special, it has memories. It doesn’t have be something good, necessarily. Something tragic will definitely make the place stand out in your mind and you won’t soon forget it. When something good happens, though, it makes the place very special, indeed, and when change happens, you can’t help but be nostalgic. I fell in love once over some Viale Lemonades. She was and is a very special girl, but we don’t talk anymore. You might have read me mention or if you know me in person heard me speak of these infamous Viale Lemonades before. They’ve appeared in at least a couple of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” before.. Here and over ...

Last night Las Vegas enjoyed a new level of what has become something of a norm for our little town… As of late, Hollywood sees Las Vegas not only as it’s new “back lot” where so much film and television production happens, but we’ve been seeing premieres of films more regularly, and in this particular case, a major one: Ocean’s 13 premiering at CineVegas at The Palms. Along with a number of stars from the film, a host of other celebrities in town for CineVegas were out in full force for the opening. The crowds were eight and ten people deep trying to get photos of their favorite actors and I’m sure the Palms casino was booking large numbers all night. For years now, CineVegas has been working to make ...

It only took the feds 21 years, but they’ve finally gotten at least one plea of guilty in the killings of two Chicago Outfit mafia members. These guys were made famous, albeit with names changed, in the hit movie “Casino” by Martin Scorsese. Tony “the ant” Spilotro is the real name of the character played by Joe Pesci in the film. He and his brother (Michael Spilotro in real life) were both beaten to death and buried in a field in Indiana, if you recall from watching the movie – that event in the film was factual. I’ve read the book “Casino” by Nicholas Pileggi and it is a work of non-fiction, changing no names and telling the story in its entirety. It’s an intriguing story from a fascinating time ...
