Okay, sure, I’m just playing into the general perspective people have about Las Vegas’ architectural heritage (or lack thereof,) but it is true that things tend to get built, used, aged, and torn down around here. It’s nice to see other cities repurposing older buildings for new, more modern uses. We’re definitely an anomaly as far as the primary reason for growth goes and that will, of course, cause things to be developed and redeveloped in rather conspicuous ways, but surely everything need not be demolished entirely, right? That sure seems reasonable to me, and when the buildings in question happen to be owned by the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, or are local Federally-owned property, I think it’s a lot easier for them to justify redevelopment, as individual ...

For years I’ve enjoyed Downtown Las Vegas in a way that I think is lost on a lot of people. I actually have always kind of dug the old, kitschy vibe, the stuff with a little history, the stuff with a little character (and a lot of characters, at that…) I like walking into casinos (at least the clean ones, anyways) that have low ceilings with antique lighting fixtures and wood paneling – cashier’s cages with cute little brass bars. It’s sort of like the Old West. Do I go down there all the time? No, of course not. Do I feel a sense a security knowing that at least some things never change? Hell yes. …But things change. Nowhere do things change as often or as quickly as they ...

Okay, it’s true: I don’t believe in luck. Big time superstitions – even small, insidious ones – can be the undoing of any gambler, but mostly, I have always been big on mathematics and science and not so much on defying the inevitable. The law of large numbers is on your side, so long as you’re gambling with an edge. I’ve seen that principle in practice so many times, if I have a “belief,” it’s in the math. There are some very troubling mathematics and probability issues surrounding marriage today. Well, it’s not a new problem, but it seems to be a very consistent one – I’m sure that everyone has the same impression about marriage, more or less: the odds of any marriage working out for the long term ...

The last couple of nights people have started arriving in town for The Las Vegas Grand Prix. This is exactly the kind of thing that is great for Las Vegas. Special events with a special brand of customer coming into town for a unique event that’s a first. Las Vegas’ downtown will definitely benefit from the exposure and the renovations and changes that are taking place, and the Golden Nugget in particular, will get a premier event to showcase the new look. Whether you love him or hate, Oscar Goodman is great for this town and this is a great example of the kinds of things that were not taking place before he went into office. The only downside to the Las Vegas Grand Prix is navigating around downtown. The ...

Bloggin’ ain’t easy. For a blog to be successful you have to write well and write regularly as a bottom-line commitment if you hope to establish and maintain a good readership. My recent week-and-a-half lapse is evidence of how easily it is for other things in life to override the time needed to carefully pick topics and put together good posts. In the blogosphere, we have quotas to meet. That’s just for those of us currently writing, mind you. I can only imagine how much time and effort must go into planning and producing a regular podcast…. Jon Favreau’s 1996 film “Swingers” starring Favreau himself and Vince Vaughn is a classic and one of my personal favorites. When Trent(Vaughn) tells his sheepish friend Mike what they need and they are ...

Tonight I was showing a friend that recently moved to the Las Vegas Valley around town and we ventured downtown for a bit while I was helping him learn the major streets. We decided to go into the Nugget and walk around for a little while. The last time I was in the Golden Nugget they were in the middle of the renovations. I could see work progressing in the pool area and could tell it would be really nice once completed, but the whole place was a mess. I recall it taking twenty minutes just to find a restroom which was hidden upstairs near the buffet. Today my visit was much different. Walking from the parking garage into the pool area entrance I could tell right away that the ...

Our mayor, Oscar Goodman, is a man with both a colorful past and a colorful present. Goodman became widely known for representing mafia enforcer Tony “The Ant” Spilotro back in the day (Joe Pesci played the screen version of Tony Spilotro in “Casino” with not much but the name changed.) More recently he was given national attention for telling a class of fourth grade students if he were lost on a deserted island he’d like to have his favorite bottle of gin with him, because he really enjoys drinking, apparently, as he listed to the same group of kids “drinking” among his hobbies. He says he’s the George Washington of mayors, in that he can not tell a lie. Hell, I have to say – honesty is something refreshing in ...

Lacy Thomas, the CEO of University Medical Center, which is Las Vegas’ only public hospital and where locals and tourists are taken to for the most serious of trauma and emergencies, has been fired and the hospital was raided with loads of documents seized by police. Yes, they raided the hospital. Here is a Review-Journal article about the case Apparently UMC has lost over $34 million in the last year. That’s almost twice the amount reported lost by the CEO to the county commission in November. There are miscalculations that happen every day in business, but this is ridiculous. I know that most people involved with the hospital would likely claim that there is no effect on the quality of the medical care and attention patients are given, but that ...

(…but you should do anyway!) Cabbies in Las Vegas are usually only interested in suggesting entertainment that they have a vested interest in. They get kickbacks from clubs, et cetera, when they drop off a fare at the establishment, in addition to the cab fee and tip. This is not a slight to the cabby – it’s simply the business they are in. If you press them for suggestions for dining or atypical entertainment I’m sure they’ll come up with something for you, but I decided to make a quick list of a couple of things I enjoy here in Las Vegas that a cabby would probably never think to suggest to you… 1) The Double Down Saloon For some people, myself included, it’s amusing to find the biggest dive ...
