I have to confess: it’s been too damned long since I’ve been out clubbing. I’ve been working, somewhat feverishly, on a business project involving multiple websites and I just haven’t been able to take the breaks that I require of myself to go out. Why? Oh, because I drink like a fish, and as a result, one night turns into two or three days of seriously reduced productivity. Sooooo… Tiffany hit me up today and wanted to go out – neither of us had really be “out” since my birthday back in October, so I couldn’t hardly resist. Working in Las Vegas’ traditional industry tends to mean getting off and starting your “evening” at slightly odd hours – nothing new there – so until Tiff got off tonight arounde 1:30AM, ...

For years I’ve enjoyed Downtown Las Vegas in a way that I think is lost on a lot of people. I actually have always kind of dug the old, kitschy vibe, the stuff with a little history, the stuff with a little character (and a lot of characters, at that…) I like walking into casinos (at least the clean ones, anyways) that have low ceilings with antique lighting fixtures and wood paneling – cashier’s cages with cute little brass bars. It’s sort of like the Old West. Do I go down there all the time? No, of course not. Do I feel a sense a security knowing that at least some things never change? Hell yes. …But things change. Nowhere do things change as often or as quickly as they ...

Dudes in costumes playing Magic the Gathering. Jesus I’m stoked. All kidding aside, starting this Friday and running through Sunday, the 2007 Las Vegas Renaissance Festival is going on at Sunset Park. It’s $10 per person per day or $25 if you’re bored and have the stamina and/or will to go for all three days. Coincidentally, we’re in preparations to start our new Las Vegas video podcast and will be out at at the festival on Friday shooting some film, probably eating turkey legs, and most definitely drinking beer. To actually make the day fun, in the spirit of The Three Musketeers (the movie,) we’re going wenching! Look for our camera crew in the park and come entertain our readers. Viewer participation is strongly encouraged!

They should have called it Vertigo. Seriously. My whole life I’ve been a huge fan of amusement park rides – roller coasters, especially – and all of that sort of thing. I loved it so much so, in fact, that it’s particularly odd that I still have never ridden a ride here in Las Vegas – well, at least not until last weekend. That probably stems from my basic idea that Las Vegas is an adult playground and the whole Disneyfication thing from the early 90′s is still hanging around in a few very minor ways, including amusements that were originally designed to occupy the kids while Mom and Dad spent their college tuition funds at the craps table and slot machines. That having been said, roller coasters aren’t just ...

It’s all about the ponies. That’s all I’m saying! Last night Bravo, Nick the Cabbie, and myself went out to do a little gambling at the New Frontier on it’s last night as an operating casino. It was fun! You know it’s funny how when you live in this town you can forget how much fun it can be to just go to an old casino with a couple of friends and roam around laughing while you pump “silver dollars” into a machine like they have no value. Okay, well they are made of aluminum and aren’t legal tender making them literally worthless in of themselves, but you can cash them in for the real thing! And besides, it’s really easy to forget how much fun that is when so ...

That’s right. Pilot. He thinks “driving a cab” just doesn’t sound quite right so he looks at it as being a pilot. I kinda like that. Not only is he probably the best driver I know (and a great personal friend,) he’s available for his drunken, debauched friends when in need of a lift from Rehab or various other clubs around Las Vegas! That’s right…. Our personal, Las Vegas driver, VIP style. Okay, well as VIP as you can be in a taxicab How does one go about ending up a cab driver? Well, apparently a good way to start is being a screenwriter, because that’s what Nick is. In classic Hollywood mogul fashion, he has a half dozen or so scripts in various stages of production.. Being a great, ...

Starting tomorrow, I’m going to begin a series of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” that will just sort of happen upon occasion, most likely after I’ve recently visited one of the places I will have written about. I’ve been meaning to do this for some time but I am going to make an effort to do so effective immediately. Las Vegas, Nevada is a lot things. It’s obviously the gaming capital of the world and that is just about all that most people know about Las Vegas. That definitely does influence most everything in the town to some degree, what with so many movie theaters or restaurants inside of casinos or shopping adjoining the resorts in their smaller, more upscale malls. All the local bars, of course, have gaming ...

Places you go in life are just places until something happens there. After that the place is special, it has memories. It doesn’t have be something good, necessarily. Something tragic will definitely make the place stand out in your mind and you won’t soon forget it. When something good happens, though, it makes the place very special, indeed, and when change happens, you can’t help but be nostalgic. I fell in love once over some Viale Lemonades. She was and is a very special girl, but we don’t talk anymore. You might have read me mention or if you know me in person heard me speak of these infamous Viale Lemonades before. They’ve appeared in at least a couple of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” before.. Here and over ...

Last night Las Vegas enjoyed a new level of what has become something of a norm for our little town… As of late, Hollywood sees Las Vegas not only as it’s new “back lot” where so much film and television production happens, but we’ve been seeing premieres of films more regularly, and in this particular case, a major one: Ocean’s 13 premiering at CineVegas at The Palms. Along with a number of stars from the film, a host of other celebrities in town for CineVegas were out in full force for the opening. The crowds were eight and ten people deep trying to get photos of their favorite actors and I’m sure the Palms casino was booking large numbers all night. For years now, CineVegas has been working to make ...

It’s never lost on me; it never gets old. The place I call home has to have the most fantastic weather of any major city on earth. I grew up in South Texas. Since most of my family and a ton of friends are there, it’s home to me(okay, not my new home, but it still gets credit,) and there are elements of the weather there that I do miss. Okay, there is one: thunderstorms. I really miss that awesome, violent, beautiful Southern thunderstorm weather. It scares some people, particularly kids. When I was a kid it made me wish it would never be over. I loved it. I’ve always found it relaxing, invigorating. Apart from the storms and rain, it gets hot in Texas, but not hot like it is ...

Feeling a bit under the weather yesterday afternoon, due to a bit of the ol’ cocktail flu, I decided to drive out to Goodsprings, Nevada with Nick the Good to have a beer at the old Pioneer Saloon I don’t think that Nick’s been south out of the Las Vegas Valley in the few months he’s been living here, so this was a nice little outing, though it’s just a short 20 mile drive or so. I’d been out to see the Pioneer Saloon once before but it was a little early in the afternoon and it wasn’t yet open. Yesterday we showed up and things were a little different altogether… Apparently around the first part of the weekend, a driver, not drunk but terribly sleepy, came around the corner ...

There’s almost nothing as mind-numbing and seemingly time-wasting as hitting the gym in your complex to go play hamster-on-a-wheel for an hour trying to burn a few extra calories, not to me at least. My brain has a marvelous way of getting hyper-bored in blazingly fast fashion and the distractions seem limitless. I think about everything I haven’t done that day, what’s on television, where I’d rather be, who I’d rather be with, and, probably what I want for dinner. It’s just not really conducive to the task at hand. I can’t take the monotony. When we first moved to Las Vegas, like most tourists, we’d take off on the Strip and go see a few places. It didn’t take long for you to realize that a “city block” in ...

It’s so precious when it happens, so rare. As a person that grew up in a very tropical environment (the Texas Gulf Coast,) “bad weather” was something that most people felt they just had to deal with. I was an odd one. I’ve always had this almost unusual affinity for water in general, rain showers for sure, and thunderstorms in particular. The more intense and violent the storm, the more positive and calm the feeling I get from it. It’s not simply the water, but there is something that feels almost cleansing from a rain storm. They say that thunderstorms bring a balance to the ionic state in the atmosphere and that is what causes the sense of inner calm after a storm, as animals, including humans, tend to be ...

Every Spring, just like every other town, Las Vegas gets some changing weather patterns. Sometimes in March, usually in April, things shift and it warms up slightly, and it just gets really nice. Somewhere in that whole process the wind changes direction and starts blowing. It doesn’t get breezy, it gets nuts. I’m up early today… A little too damn early. Like a good little boy with many irons in the proverbial fire, I opted to take a pass on last night’s festivities, which I really hated to miss. Our friends over at Vegas Club Scene were hosting their new late night party at The Men’s Club Las Vegas called Plan B. Great name for an afterhours party! Brett Pojunis is hosting this weekly at this unique, slightly tucked-away strip ...

The last couple of nights people have started arriving in town for The Las Vegas Grand Prix. This is exactly the kind of thing that is great for Las Vegas. Special events with a special brand of customer coming into town for a unique event that’s a first. Las Vegas’ downtown will definitely benefit from the exposure and the renovations and changes that are taking place, and the Golden Nugget in particular, will get a premier event to showcase the new look. Whether you love him or hate, Oscar Goodman is great for this town and this is a great example of the kinds of things that were not taking place before he went into office. The only downside to the Las Vegas Grand Prix is navigating around downtown. The ...
