Many important people come to visit The Artisan Hotel just to feel that euphoric-yet-naughty sensation they once felt in the past. Recently during a very, very busy day shift, I spotted an impressive looking female in her late thirties waiting for my approach at the hotel bar to serve her. [Editor's Note: Bree, our newest guest writer, is a bartender at The Artisan Hotel.] There was no one else in the bar except her when I ran in from the madhouse of guests in the dining room and lobby. I found out she was one of the top managers for one of the main hotels in the city, but I will not say her name nor her hotel, for she may be either quite embarrassed (or proud) of the story. ...

I want to see this sucker in action at feeding time! Feeding big fish smaller fish is fun, sure, but watching one of the most storied land predators at chow time has got to be a sight to behold. Ah, yes… the gnashing of teeth! Komodo Dragons are known for their ravenous, carnivore-style appetites. What you may not know is that they aren’t necessarily all attack-kill-eat in the wild… at least not in the time frame you might be thinking about. Komodo Dragons have a few curious adaptations. They have a bit of venom in their bite that causes almost immediate swelling and pain. This venom might ...

I think I might should be ashamed to admit this, but I’ll admit it just the same: I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live in Las Vegas. Okay, I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live anywhere, but if I were to see him, it would almost definitely have to be here in our mutual hometown, Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve always sort of intended to go and catch his show but it seems like his schedule is a little unpredictable the last few years. He takes long breaks, it appears, then I’ll see billboards saying he’s doing his nightly show at the Flamingo again and I think “I really should go see that little slice of classic Vegas while it’s still available.” And then I get the news (again) – he’s ...

Heidi Fleiss, the famous (or infamous, if you prefer; I prefer the former) Hollywood madam-to-the-stars who was convicted in 1995 for tax evasion (the pandering charges were dropped, as I understand it,) has branched out into the greater Las Vegas area, having moved to Pahrump, Nevada about a year ago. During that time the media now and again makes reference to her plans to purchase and convert a Las Vegas brothel in the Pahrump Valley into Nevada’s first male brothel for women, aptly to be named “Heidi’s Stud Farm…” For various reasons of which I do not have the details, those plans seem to be on temporary hold. A girl has to keep herself busy in the meantime while the attorneys work out the nit-picky details and the community warms ...

In an article back on January 26th I wrote about how I thought our hometown girl Katie Rees was robbed when Donald Trump and company stripped her of her crown for having a night of Las Vegas-style fun while out in Florida. Too bad the photos cost her her tiara and sash, but I think she’s gotten way more benefit out of the publicity than she would have had without it. She’s a celebrity now. Before this, no one knew who she was, really. Anyway I was walking by a magazine rack last night and Katie Rees’ name jumped out at me on the cover. When my eyes focused I realized it was the cover of Hustler Magazine. The model on the cover was obviously carefully chosen to look like ...

It only took the feds 21 years, but they’ve finally gotten at least one plea of guilty in the killings of two Chicago Outfit mafia members. These guys were made famous, albeit with names changed, in the hit movie “Casino” by Martin Scorsese. Tony “the ant” Spilotro is the real name of the character played by Joe Pesci in the film. He and his brother (Michael Spilotro in real life) were both beaten to death and buried in a field in Indiana, if you recall from watching the movie – that event in the film was factual. I’ve read the book “Casino” by Nicholas Pileggi and it is a work of non-fiction, changing no names and telling the story in its entirety. It’s an intriguing story from a fascinating time ...

Feeling a bit under the weather yesterday afternoon, due to a bit of the ol’ cocktail flu, I decided to drive out to Goodsprings, Nevada with Nick the Good to have a beer at the old Pioneer Saloon I don’t think that Nick’s been south out of the Las Vegas Valley in the few months he’s been living here, so this was a nice little outing, though it’s just a short 20 mile drive or so. I’d been out to see the Pioneer Saloon once before but it was a little early in the afternoon and it wasn’t yet open. Yesterday we showed up and things were a little different altogether… Apparently around the first part of the weekend, a driver, not drunk but terribly sleepy, came around the corner ...

The changes at The Palms Hotel and Casino, with the exception of the new condominium tower, are now complete. The last change in the process was the completion and opening of The Pearl on Saturday night, featuring a live performance by Gwen Stefani and appearances by a number of celebrities. We’d promised some photos from the red carpet at the event. Unfortunately, the red carpet at this event was a staged area inside of the ballroom next to The Pearl and since we didn’t know that ahead of time we hadn’t requested proper press credentials, alas. At special celebrity events there in the past, such as CineVegas, the red carpet has been a very open affair. I’m sort of kicking my own ass for that one, but we did enjoy ...

The Maloofs know how to work it. One of biggest features of the recently expanded Palms Hotel and Casino is their live music venue they are calling “The Pearl.” Not a reference to the mysterious hatch in Lost, The Pearl is said to be – nay, hyped to be – one of the best places to experience live performances of music anywhere… ever. From the photographs, The Pearl definitely looks like a great venue with some very unique, very special features. There are old school theater boxes all around the upper deck above the lower crowd’s main seating area. I’m assuming they will be providing bottle service, et cetera, to VIP’s willing to shell out the coin for those seats – it would be like the modern rock show equivalent ...

In a funny-serious sounding voice, he’ll posit in the form of a question, “What’s wrong with Mikie???“ It’s true that some of the stories we’ve all heard Michael Jackson has been associated with over the years are just, well, a bit out there… Like the oxygen tank he used to sleep in. Or his partner in crime who happened to be a chimpanzee. Or the amusement park he lives in.. With zoo animals wandering all around… This latest idea from the ...

The Miss America Pageant is currently underway at the Aladdin Resort and Casino (being remodeled and soon to be Planet Hollywood Las Vegas.) This has me thinking about beauty pageants in light of the recent “scandals” involving pageant organizations and their participants. It’s been yet another controversial year for the Donald Trump-owned beauty pageant, with The Donald getting hated on (even called a “pimp” by Rosie O’Donnell) for removing the tiaras of a couple of contest winners, including Nevada’s own Katie Rees, and his ownership and style of managing his pageants. Miss Rees’ crown was revoked when some photos (link below) were posted on the Internet predating her competition in the Miss Nevada-USA Pageant, the state championship that sends its winner to the Miss USA competition. She was photographed in ...

Our mayor, Oscar Goodman, is a man with both a colorful past and a colorful present. Goodman became widely known for representing mafia enforcer Tony “The Ant” Spilotro back in the day (Joe Pesci played the screen version of Tony Spilotro in “Casino” with not much but the name changed.) More recently he was given national attention for telling a class of fourth grade students if he were lost on a deserted island he’d like to have his favorite bottle of gin with him, because he really enjoys drinking, apparently, as he listed to the same group of kids “drinking” among his hobbies. He says he’s the George Washington of mayors, in that he can not tell a lie. Hell, I have to say – honesty is something refreshing in ...

In the movie “Casino” by Martin Scorsese, Robert Deniro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci, played on-screen renditions of persons who lived, worked, schemed, thrived, and ultimately fell from power right here in Las Vegas. In the movie they called the casino The Tangiers. To the millions of visitors who patronized the real casino that the film was based upon it was known as The Stardust. The Stardust helped define an era for Las Vegas casinos. It was the largest property on the Las Vegas Strip for quite some time and began the move towards large mega-resorts on Las Vegas Boulevard. The movie of the same name was based on the book “Casino” by Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorsese – a book where the names and facts were not changed at ...

There has been a great deal in the press in recent months regarding the homeless population in Las Vegas, and our mayor, Oscar Goodman, and his attempts to combat the associated problems. One of the main focal points of his administration has always been to revitalize the downtown area. There have been strides made in that area, to be sure, but the area is in transition, at best, and has lots of room for improvement. I absolutely commend our mayor for supporting awesome initiatives like the First Fridays art community movement and supporting any and all real estate redevelopment projects that have gone on and are currently under way. For me, though, I don’t see a real simple solution to the current issue at hand. The mayor supported – nay, ...
