The night is still young, even if I were to judge by another city’s standards, but the guy being placed into my taxi must have started drinking at some point before noon. The girl mothering him is, surprisingly, not his mother… they seem to be about the same age. She tells me to take them to the Palms and almost immediately notices the camera attached to the windshield. I explain that the camera footage is only reviewed when something happens, but I get the feeling that most people don’t believe me when I say this. Most people probably also don’t realize that, on any given day, there are thousands of taxicabs on the roads in Las Vegas and that the cars only stop running long enough for the next driver ...

It’s a little after nine o’clock in the morning and for the past forty-five minutes I’ve been driving back and forth from the MGM Signature towers to the Mandalay Bay Convention Center as fast as the passengers and the traffic will allow. It’s not the most desirable fare, but today I happen to be restricted. (Restricted cabs are prohibited from picking up rides Downtown, on the Strip, or at McCarran International Airport.) In a non-restricted cab I could go just about anywhere else, but the Signature is the closest location without a Las Vegas Boulevard address and there are plenty of rides because everyone is going to the convention. A short ride now is always better than another potentially short ride after a possible wait in a taxi line. I’ve never kicked a person out of my cab and I’ve never made a customer clean up their own vomit, but I’m pretty sure that if he’s wrong I will unfortunately only be able to choose one of these options. Luckily, (for them as well as me) the ride to their hotel is uneventful. Once outside, the guy puts the high-heeled shoes that he’s been carrying on top of the car in order to free his hands to help the girl get out. And when I ...

Despite the urgency of his flailing, I’m almost past him by the time I notice and I have no doubt that one of the other cabs will pick him up before I can turn around.
Many important people come to visit The Artisan Hotel just to feel that euphoric-yet-naughty sensation they once felt in the past. Recently during a very, very busy day shift, I spotted an impressive looking female in her late thirties waiting for my approach at the hotel bar to serve her. [Editor's Note: Bree, our newest guest writer, is a bartender at The Artisan Hotel.] There was no one else in the bar except her when I ran in from the madhouse of guests in the dining room and lobby. I found out she was one of the top managers for one of the main hotels in the city, but I will not say her name nor her hotel, for she may be either quite embarrassed (or proud) of the story. ...

“While Las Vegas Sleeps…” has always been about stories about Las Vegas, from the very beginning. It always will be. It’s not just about hearsay or conjecture. It’s about personal mileage. The way I live my life, well, I’m something of a student of Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo journalism philosophy of telling stories: Go where the story is, interact with it on its terms, and become the story. We’re in the middle of a redesign of the site that I’ve been planning for some time – it has been long-coming, due to my need to remediate myself in the ways of modern web design. I’ve been promising this for over a year, I realize, but the fact is, every time I’ve learned something that I needed to to make it ...

I just saw this article in my news feed and it really pisses me off: Sexual Assault At A Strip Hotel: Metro Searches For Suspect Now if you open and read that article you see a bunch of completely useless information. Metro needs your help tracking down a sexual assault suspect. They say a man attacked someone at a Strip hotel early Saturday morning. Investigators say the man is armed and dangerous. They describe him as a white male, in his mid-30s with brown hair and a goatee. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555. Wow. Thanks for giving us all that information so we can actually help find this sorry son of a bitch and put him behind bars where he belongs. Why even bother publishing ...

This English guy has been talking about how much trouble he’s going to be in during the entire trip to his hotel. The entire trip to his hotel…from the strip club. The three remaining passengers offer to go up to his room, wake the sleeping wife and help fabricate a believable story, but, for some strange reason, he politely declines their generosity. “We’ve got to get some rest anyway,” one of them says, “but don’t worry, we’ll come visit you in England. You’re going to see us again sooner than you really want to.” “Yeah, we’ve booked the same flight. We’ll be going home with you.” They all laugh and the car door closes. As soon as he’s out of sight, though, the next destination changes. “Take us to the ...
