I screwed up last year. I slept on an opportunity to join a kickball team with some friends (some of which have since moved out of Vegas, as people tend to do, sometimes.) This year I didn’t hear anything about the league starting up amongst friends so, naturally, I did nothing. For some, adults playing kickball might seem like a silly diversion from life in Sin City. Well, pfffft to that shit. Kickball was the second best physical education sport in school, second only to Dodgeball. Now, it’s true that Kickball doesn’t have the genius marketing team of Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller on their side – “If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball…” – but what Kickball lacks in marketing it makes up for with ...

I just love the name… So much so, in fact, that today I thought to myself, “Self, you should go get a last minute pedicure before you leave on your summer trip to Texas,” having seen their very memorable sign dozens of times. See, the thing is, on Sundays nail salons, hair salons, and those sorts of service-oriented businesses tend to close early, usually by five or six p.m. I’m leaving on Tuesday and tomorrow is going to be crazy enough already, and, well, my feet need to be all they can be. I can’t be drinking and debauching myself all over Austin, Texas, with my junk all junked up. Get Nailed Salon, across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino near Starbucks, has ...

Las Vegas, Nevada, is famously dry in the middle of the desert. Most people think of the desert as a place where things are dry as a bone – barely supporting life as we know it. The truth is, everything needs water. It rains here. It even snows here upon occasion (though it almost never sticks to the ground anywhere near the Strip.) In fact, it snows here every year on the mountain. That’s why we even have our very own little ski resort, The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort (owned by the same people that own the Park City Mountain Resort, incidentally.) The last couple of nights we’ve been experiencing one of two parts of what I think tend to generally constitute our “rainy seasons” here in Las ...

It’s all about the ponies. That’s all I’m saying! Last night Bravo, Nick the Cabbie, and myself went out to do a little gambling at the New Frontier on it’s last night as an operating casino. It was fun! You know it’s funny how when you live in this town you can forget how much fun it can be to just go to an old casino with a couple of friends and roam around laughing while you pump “silver dollars” into a machine like they have no value. Okay, well they are made of aluminum and aren’t legal tender making them literally worthless in of themselves, but you can cash them in for the real thing! And besides, it’s really easy to forget how much fun that is when so ...

There’s almost nothing as mind-numbing and seemingly time-wasting as hitting the gym in your complex to go play hamster-on-a-wheel for an hour trying to burn a few extra calories, not to me at least. My brain has a marvelous way of getting hyper-bored in blazingly fast fashion and the distractions seem limitless. I think about everything I haven’t done that day, what’s on television, where I’d rather be, who I’d rather be with, and, probably what I want for dinner. It’s just not really conducive to the task at hand. I can’t take the monotony. When we first moved to Las Vegas, like most tourists, we’d take off on the Strip and go see a few places. It didn’t take long for you to realize that a “city block” in ...

The last couple of nights people have started arriving in town for The Las Vegas Grand Prix. This is exactly the kind of thing that is great for Las Vegas. Special events with a special brand of customer coming into town for a unique event that’s a first. Las Vegas’ downtown will definitely benefit from the exposure and the renovations and changes that are taking place, and the Golden Nugget in particular, will get a premier event to showcase the new look. Whether you love him or hate, Oscar Goodman is great for this town and this is a great example of the kinds of things that were not taking place before he went into office. The only downside to the Las Vegas Grand Prix is navigating around downtown. The ...

The proverbial stops have been pulled. This might be the most decked-out I’ve seen Las Vegas since I moved here a little over three years ago. There are special bus wraps regarding the All-Star Game, many buildings have reprographic wraps on them, including, but not limited to Mandalay Bay, the Luxor, and MGM. The Lion in front of MGM and the Statue of Liberty in front of New York, New York are even wearing two-story tall East and West basketball jerseys. In typical Las Vegas “which way is north?” style, the MGM Lion is wearing West (on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard) and Lady Liberty (on the west side) is wearing East. The lion’s cute, though! It looks like his jersey is one of those onesie things little ...

The delay on the story, which I originally heard the next day, was because I had to get a few details verified before I published the article and wanted to make sure I had the story straight. Mister N is a good friend of mine and he had no reason to make the story up and I’ve never had a reason to doubt him… It sounds a bit fantastical and some of you will question it, even as I am still curious ...

That’s right – it’s Superbowl XLI right here in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada! Okay, I realize all the running and running into each other… the grunting and the drama will take place down in South Florida at Dolphins Stadium… Wait a minute… what am I saying??? Las Vegas will arguably be home to more drama, grunting, collisions, yelling, and, yes, probably crying, than they could possibly hope for on location at the Superbowl proper. Sure, they have bookies down there. Sure, they even have some Indian reservation casinos in Florida. At the kickoff, though, there won’t be anywhere near the amount of ...

Lacy Thomas, the CEO of University Medical Center, which is Las Vegas’ only public hospital and where locals and tourists are taken to for the most serious of trauma and emergencies, has been fired and the hospital was raided with loads of documents seized by police. Yes, they raided the hospital. Here is a Review-Journal article about the case Apparently UMC has lost over $34 million in the last year. That’s almost twice the amount reported lost by the CEO to the county commission in November. There are miscalculations that happen every day in business, but this is ridiculous. I know that most people involved with the hospital would likely claim that there is no effect on the quality of the medical care and attention patients are given, but that ...

People who visit here tend to be completely caught up in the spectacle that is the Las Vegas resort corridor/Las Vegas Strip area, and really aren’t privy to the other areas of the gaming industry that live and thrive here in the Valley – an industry that is very much a part of the Las Vegas lifestyle for many people.
It’s so hot in the desert! And the other, slightly less popular – It’s so cold in the desert! Right now, it’s anything but hot. The fountain in the entrance to my neighborhood looked like a chandelier made of ice! Really neat-looking… Last night it was said to be 29 degrees. Tonight it should best that temperature by at least another degree or so. The desert is an amazing place, for it’s extremes and it’s unique beauty. I love being in this environment, even though, being polar-oriented in nature, myself (or so my friends & lovers have told me when visiting and freezing to death in my house,) I actually have been running the heater the last few nights. Peculiar, that. Now if we could only get some snow going, ...

Most of the ski resorts generally try to shoot for right around Thanksgiving weekend to open for the season. So far this year, even Mammoth Mountain has only about a foot of icy hard-pack to “slide” down, because that ain’t skiing or boarding, for sure… more of an attempt at a controlled chaos descent. A lot of people that live here aren’t even aware of it, for that matter. If they hear rumors of skiing nearby they dismiss it as very unlikely and rarely do they investigate further. About forty minutes from The Strip, to the northwest, is some geography unlike anything you are likely ...
