The Burlesque Hall of Fame is going on in Las Vegas this weekend at The Orleans Hotel and Casino. There are going to be dozens and dozens of classic burlesque performers as well as a ton of new burlesque talent keeping an old style of sexy entertainment alive and well for our generation. Tickets are on sale on The Orleans website. I’m looking at Burlesque Hall of Fame’s website at the moment. I’ve never seen so many pasties! Granted, they aren’t required at most adult establishments these days, but it makes me think… There’s something really missing from modern day adult entertainment… starting with real performance, costuming, and, well, enthusiasm for what they are doing! I’ve known a handful of adult dancers that wanted to make an attempt at featured ...

They Just Don’t Make ‘em Like They Used To… Tonight marked the last public performance of the Folies Bergère at the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The show had an almost fifty year-long run at the resort and has seen some unimaginable changes here in town. I was happy I was able to get a couple of tickets at a two person table in the center for one of tonight’s two performances. Las Vegas’ topless showgirl and variety performance shows are definitely a dying breed in Las Vegas. It seems that producers don’t really know what will work well here in town, and as a result, when they find something that is working, they just try to duplicate that as often as they can, rather than really putting ...

I have to confess: it’s been too damned long since I’ve been out clubbing. I’ve been working, somewhat feverishly, on a business project involving multiple websites and I just haven’t been able to take the breaks that I require of myself to go out. Why? Oh, because I drink like a fish, and as a result, one night turns into two or three days of seriously reduced productivity. Sooooo… Tiffany hit me up today and wanted to go out – neither of us had really be “out” since my birthday back in October, so I couldn’t hardly resist. Working in Las Vegas’ traditional industry tends to mean getting off and starting your “evening” at slightly odd hours – nothing new there – so until Tiff got off tonight arounde 1:30AM, ...

I just love the name… So much so, in fact, that today I thought to myself, “Self, you should go get a last minute pedicure before you leave on your summer trip to Texas,” having seen their very memorable sign dozens of times. See, the thing is, on Sundays nail salons, hair salons, and those sorts of service-oriented businesses tend to close early, usually by five or six p.m. I’m leaving on Tuesday and tomorrow is going to be crazy enough already, and, well, my feet need to be all they can be. I can’t be drinking and debauching myself all over Austin, Texas, with my junk all junked up.
Since it opened, I’ve somehow managed to not go to a show at The Pearl, the live concert venue at The Palms. I’ve heard so much about how there aren’t really any bad seats in the house, as the layout makes the most of its relatively small size. After tonight’s show featuring one of my favorite comedians, Eddie Izzard, I have to say that I can’t imagine that there are any really good seats in the house. Okay, you can see well from pretty much anywhere, sure, but you won’t be enjoying the view in comfort, let’s put it that way. I understand that they had to make the most of the space they had to work with, but I was left wondering if the seats were designed by Japanese ...

I want to see this sucker in action at feeding time! Feeding big fish smaller fish is fun, sure, but watching one of the most storied land predators at chow time has got to be a sight to behold. Ah, yes… the gnashing of teeth! Komodo Dragons are known for their ravenous, carnivore-style appetites. What you may not know is that they aren’t necessarily all attack-kill-eat in the wild… at least not in the time frame you might be thinking about. Komodo Dragons have a few curious adaptations. They have a bit of venom in their bite that causes almost immediate swelling and pain. This venom might ...

Okay, maybe we won’t rejoice, but seriously, the Star Trek: The Experience attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton is one of the few remaining un-niceties at the venerable old hotel and just doesn’t fit (and never did.) They have been working pretty diligently to restore some luster and reinvigorate the property for the last few years, and when you walk into a Hilton, you just don’t expect to see uber-nerd cheese as part of the whole ambience – it was killing the vibe they are working on reclaiming. Now I am not saying that I don’t like Star Trek. In fact, I used to watch The Next Generation regularly when I was younger and it was in early syndication, sometimes seeing the same episodes multiple times. I love the ...

What the hell is a Doodlebop? Is it some new form of mind-altering drug ruining our youth? Does it make you dress in painfully-colored clothing and frolic like it’s Pride Parade Day in San Francisco? Why do I keep hearing about how “huge Doodlebops are” when I’ve never personally experienced a Doodlebop. I mean, let’s face it, if something’s “huge” around here… I’d know about it! I always thought I was in the loop on new drugs used recreationally for mind-altering purposes, but I have to say, if it makes you look like this, I don’t ever want one! I had meant to mention his passing but it was a hectic week for me, but I wanted to make mention here now. I’m always a bit sentimental when I think about Old Vegas, Classic Vegas, and what it must have been like back then. I rather think I would prefer some things to be how they used to be. I would love to step into the storied Copa Room at The Sands Hotel to hear Dean Martin on a night when the Sands Hotel’s sign read “Dean Martin” and in small letters “Maybe Frank – Maybe Sammy.” It was those iconic images of Las ...

They should have called it Vertigo. Seriously. My whole life I’ve been a huge fan of amusement park rides – roller coasters, especially – and all of that sort of thing. I loved it so much so, in fact, that it’s particularly odd that I still have never ridden a ride here in Las Vegas – well, at least not until last weekend. That probably stems from my basic idea that Las Vegas is an adult playground and the whole Disneyfication thing from the early 90′s is still hanging around in a few very minor ways, including amusements that were originally designed to occupy the kids while Mom and Dad spent their college tuition funds at the craps table and slot machines. That having been said, roller coasters aren’t just ...

I think I might should be ashamed to admit this, but I’ll admit it just the same: I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live in Las Vegas. Okay, I’ve never seen Wayne Newton perform live anywhere, but if I were to see him, it would almost definitely have to be here in our mutual hometown, Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve always sort of intended to go and catch his show but it seems like his schedule is a little unpredictable the last few years. He takes long breaks, it appears, then I’ll see billboards saying he’s doing his nightly show at the Flamingo again and I think “I really should go see that little slice of classic Vegas while it’s still available.” And then I get the news (again) – he’s ...

Apparently early this evening riders on the Sahara’s Speed: The Ride roller coaster got a little more than they bargained for. Ladder firetrucks had to be called out to the Sahara Hotel and Casino to get sixteen people off of the ride that were stuck in the coaster cars just before the big loop. The riders all said that the ride slowed down before the loop and moved backwards until it came to rest where they were rescued. There was obviously a malfunction, but the news reports have said that the ride actually functioned exactly as it should have under the circumstances. Apparently there was a power abnormality with a breaker of some kind and the ride shut itself down as it was supposed to as a safety measure. Nice ...

The Miss America Pageant is currently underway at the Aladdin Resort and Casino (being remodeled and soon to be Planet Hollywood Las Vegas.) This has me thinking about beauty pageants in light of the recent “scandals” involving pageant organizations and their participants. It’s been yet another controversial year for the Donald Trump-owned beauty pageant, with The Donald getting hated on (even called a “pimp” by Rosie O’Donnell) for removing the tiaras of a couple of contest winners, including Nevada’s own Katie Rees, and his ownership and style of managing his pageants. Miss Rees’ crown was revoked when some photos (link below) were posted on the Internet predating her competition in the Miss Nevada-USA Pageant, the state championship that sends its winner to the Miss USA competition. She was photographed in ...

Man I hope this isn’t the beginning of the way of things for the next month.. December is notoriously slow in Las Vegas, but from the way I’m getting emails and text messages with invites to free seats at shows around town that are normally pretty much filled, I’d say people must have shopping and Christmas on their minds, not Las Vegas, gambling, drinking and carousing… alas. Poor Carrot Top. For two days Las Vegas Seat Fillers has been trying to fill up tonight’s (Saturday) show at the Luxor. I suppose they finally got it filled a few moments ago, as I got a “no more seats left” text message. Even The Movable Buffet’s blog is commenting on how slow this weekend looks to be. One almost perfect barometer of ...
