Oh yes… Just like that. Mmmmm The sweet taste of political relevance! No more voting in Texas where the rural, overwhelmingly conservative vote and Washington influence usually makes the primary election winners a foregone conclusion.

Since different states have different primary election or caucus rules, it turns out that the Republican Party does not allow you to vote in their caucus in Nevada unless you are a registered Republican, unlike the Democratic Party, who allows you to register as a Democrat at the time of the caucus. This is unfortunate, because unlike some states, such as Texas where I grew up, you can fully intend to vote Libertarian, Green Party, Dem, Republican, or whatever in the general election, but weigh in with your vote in the primary election for another party.

In fact, it was at a time when it seemed like all you heard on the news was the latest and greatest imaginings of super-wealthy developers for Las Vegas and the impending “Manhattanization” of our fair city.

One issue that has always been of first-order importance to me – my whole life, in fact – has been that of first amendment protections of free speech and a free press. I personally feel that it’s better to err on the side of inconvenience or even discomfort for the masses in the interest of protecting free speech, however inflammatory or salacious it might be. In the end, I believe that even the most horrific ideas being voiced publicly will serve only to incriminate the speaker by putting a spotlight on ill thoughts and agendas. It’s those sneaky types who say one thing in public but have a very different actual agenda they are planning to put forward that you really have to worry about.. And they never say what they are really thinking…
