I’ve never kicked a person out of my cab and I’ve never made a customer clean up their own vomit, but I’m pretty sure that if he’s wrong I will unfortunately only be able to choose one of these options. Luckily, (for them as well as me) the ride to their hotel is uneventful. Once outside, the guy puts the high-heeled shoes that he’s been carrying on top of the car in order to free his hands to help the girl get out. And when I ...

Well, usually I find myself going, “uhm, okay..” Tonight I finally got one that I thought was interesting.. There has to be a Las Vegas Life Lesson in here somewhere: The Way I See It #112 If you’ve got a dollar and you spend twenty-nine cents on a loaf of bread, you’ve got seventy-one cents left. But if you’ve got seventeen grand and you spend twenty-nine cents on a loaf of bread, you’ve still got seventeen grand. There’s a math lesson for you. -Steve Martin Yeah. That’s Vegas math, baby! Math favors the big stacks. Don’t play close to the felt. Ever.

Metro needs your help tracking down a sexual assault suspect. They say a man attacked someone at a Strip hotel early Saturday morning. Investigators say the man is armed and dangerous. They describe him as a white male, in his mid-30s with brown hair and a goatee. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555. Wow. Thanks for giving us all that information so we can actually help find this sorry son of a bitch and put him behind bars where he belongs. Why even bother publishing ...

Okay, sure, I’m just playing into the general perspective people have about Las Vegas’ architectural heritage (or lack thereof,) but it is true that things tend to get built, used, aged, and torn down around here. It’s nice to see other cities repurposing older buildings for new, more modern uses. We’re definitely an anomaly as far as the primary reason for growth goes and that will, of course, cause things to be developed and redeveloped in rather conspicuous ways, but surely everything need not be demolished entirely, right? That sure seems reasonable to me, and when the buildings in question happen to be owned by the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, or are local Federally-owned property, I think it’s a lot easier for them to justify redevelopment, as individual ...

There is probably a slicker, less eyebrow-raising name for what is going on between Nevada and a few other states, including, but probably not limited to, Utah. I was raised in an era and in a country that seems to be a different place in many respects, nowadays. There was a time when, for instance, if you had a ticket from some three horse town in another part of your own state, it was up to you and that jurisdiction to work out the payment. It was not going to affect you where you lived unless the ticket happened to have been state police. That was to protect citizens from small towns using speed traps as a way to raise local money at the expense of people traveling on roads ...

When I first moved to Las Vegas a number of years ago we were already at like year three or four of what is now like an eight or nine year-long “drought.” I remember thinking, “wow – drought in a desert? It’s supposed to be normally dry. It must be like crazy dry.” Then some other interesting, counterintuitive things happened. Aside from hearing mention a few times of the local area being ahead on average rainful, a huge amount of snow fell up on Mount Charleston. So much so that at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard resort there was an avalanche that killed a boy named Allen Brett Hutchison. Avalanches kill people in the ...

Oh yes… Just like that. Mmmmm The sweet taste of political relevance! No more voting in Texas where the rural, overwhelmingly conservative vote and Washington influence usually makes the primary election winners a foregone conclusion. Since different states have different primary election or caucus rules, it turns out that the Republican Party does not allow you to vote in their caucus in Nevada unless you are a registered Republican, unlike the Democratic Party, who allows you to register as a Democrat at the time of the caucus. This is unfortunate, because unlike some states, such as Texas where I grew up, you can fully intend to vote Libertarian, Green Party, Dem, Republican, or whatever in the general election, but weigh in with your vote in the primary election for another ...

While not necessarily a very political blog, While Las Vegas Sleeps… and those of us involved here try to be politically and socially aware. One huge, often ignored by the general public issue regarding the future of the Internet is that of “net neutrality.” In a nutshell, this is the guiding principle of openness, freedom, and a hands-off approach to providing Internet service, insuring freedom of speech and a rich, competitive, environment where the little guys can stand toe-to-toe with the corporations. YourDot.com or Google.com – if the content is available it shouldn’t be any quicker to access that of a giant than that of a gerbil. Right now there are forces in the world that have changed the playing field of providing internet service. In the not too distant ...

It was being talked about around the same time that Ivana Trump announced her super-tall building on the property at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara. In fact, it was at a time when it seemed like all you heard on the news was the latest and greatest imaginings of super-wealthy developers for Las Vegas and the impending “Manhattanization” of our fair city. They even have a web domain and “magazine” devoted to it, though I’ve never seen it anywhere.. I personally feel that it’s better to err on the side of inconvenience or even discomfort for the masses in the interest of protecting free speech, however inflammatory or salacious it might be. In the end, I believe that even the most horrific ideas being voiced publicly will serve only to incriminate the speaker by putting a spotlight on ill thoughts and agendas. It’s those sneaky types who say one thing in public but have a very different actual agenda they are planning to put forward that you really have to worry about.. And they never say what ...

For many months now, there has a been a “controversy” in the local media. No, it hasn’t been the ill treatment of Las Vegas’ homeless population – that one lost it’s appeal back in the fall. It hasn’t been a number of other thought-provoking, socially-conscious issues that are very active in our community and should be taking up space in the local news – issues that should remain in focus until workable solutions to the problems are found and decisive actions are taken… Oh, no, not those issues… We’re [still] talking about the flight path for departures out of McCarran International Airport. Seriously important, life-changing stuff. For those of your who do not know what this about, allow me to bring you up to speed… McCarran International Airport, the primary ...

Our mayor, Oscar Goodman, is a man with both a colorful past and a colorful present. Goodman became widely known for representing mafia enforcer Tony “The Ant” Spilotro back in the day (Joe Pesci played the screen version of Tony Spilotro in “Casino” with not much but the name changed.) More recently he was given national attention for telling a class of fourth grade students if he were lost on a deserted island he’d like to have his favorite bottle of gin with him, because he really enjoys drinking, apparently, as he listed to the same group of kids “drinking” among his hobbies. He says he’s the George Washington of mayors, in that he can not tell a lie. Hell, I have to say – honesty is something refreshing in ...

Lacy Thomas, the CEO of University Medical Center, which is Las Vegas’ only public hospital and where locals and tourists are taken to for the most serious of trauma and emergencies, has been fired and the hospital was raided with loads of documents seized by police. Yes, they raided the hospital. Here is a Review-Journal article about the case Apparently UMC has lost over $34 million in the last year. That’s almost twice the amount reported lost by the CEO to the county commission in November. There are miscalculations that happen every day in business, but this is ridiculous. I know that most people involved with the hospital would likely claim that there is no effect on the quality of the medical care and attention patients are given, but that ...
