Anyone who knows me knows I’m constantly complaining about the lack of culture in Las Vegas. Every “community event” that I’ve gone to has been so sadly thrown together that I never go again. Even the long standing community event First Friday has lost all of its luster for me. I’d rather stay home and watch a movie than maneuver my way through all the hipsters to get to the two artists that I like.

A few months ago, a savior in the form of an awesome community event appeared: The Fabulous Sin City Roller Derby. Now this is the point where I should tell you what year it first started, how far they’ve come, et cetera… but I’m not going to do that. As far as I’m concerned they didn’t exist before I found them. They materialized out of a fog, because if they hadn't, it would kill the magic.

This time each year, soon after the weather has changed and it’s just so damned nice you want to be outside all of the time, Las Vegas Bike Fest hits town and no matter where you go you see an unusual number of bikes on the prowl around town. I’ve never really gone down to the shows to check them out, although I’ve always admired a sexy-looking chopper, myself. The Las Vegas Bike Fest is apparently a somewhat diffuse event, with different parts of it spread out over town. The event I was most interested in checking out was the custom bike show, which takes place on the Saturday of the event during the day down on Fremont Street. I went out there for an hour or so and took ...

I screwed up last year. I slept on an opportunity to join a kickball team with some friends (some of which have since moved out of Vegas, as people tend to do, sometimes.) This year I didn’t hear anything about the league starting up amongst friends so, naturally, I did nothing. For some, adults playing kickball might seem like a silly diversion from life in Sin City. Well, pfffft to that shit. Kickball was the second best physical education sport in school, second only to Dodgeball. Now, it’s true that Kickball doesn’t have the genius marketing team of Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller on their side – “If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball…” – but what Kickball lacks in marketing it makes up for with ...

I want to see this sucker in action at feeding time! Feeding big fish smaller fish is fun, sure, but watching one of the most storied land predators at chow time has got to be a sight to behold. Ah, yes… the gnashing of teeth! Komodo Dragons are known for their ravenous, carnivore-style appetites. What you may not know is that they aren’t necessarily all attack-kill-eat in the wild… at least not in the time frame you might be thinking about. Komodo Dragons have a few curious adaptations. They have a bit of venom in their bite that causes almost immediate swelling and pain. This venom might ...

Last night I was at Bucks #1 and the adjoining Kinkos, drinking my ritual coffee and taking care of some printing stuff I had to do. I saw a sign on the door of the Starbucks saying they would be closed tomorrow (today) from 5:30-9:30pm. I was a little dismayed because I’m always in that area and get one to two coffee drinks there daily (or nightly, as it were, because that’s when I’m out on the prowl.) Yes, the Starbucks on Paradise Road in Las Vegas near Flamingo is my regular caffeine dealer! My C hook-up, baby… You know you got one too! Early tonight I got a text message from Nick the Las Vegas Cabbie. He was freaked out saying, “Starbucks is closed! I’m going to die!” I ...

I knew it was dry but this is crazy! Brothas’ gotta drink out here, yo! When I first moved to Las Vegas a number of years ago we were already at like year three or four of what is now like an eight or nine year-long “drought.” I remember thinking, “wow – drought in a desert? It’s supposed to be normally dry. It must be like crazy dry.” Then some other interesting, counterintuitive things happened. Aside from hearing mention a few times of the local area being ahead on average rainful, a huge amount of snow fell up on Mount Charleston. So much so that at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard resort there was an avalanche that killed a boy named Allen Brett Hutchison. Avalanches kill people in the ...

I like to think I know a little bit about this town we call home – Las Vegas. The truth is, Las Vegas is big enough and has spread out enough that it’s really hard to keep up with all the new spots. There are hot spots and there are sweet spots. There are even best-kept-secret types of spots. There’s usually some overlap with those different types of places. Last Friday my friend Dorothy, upon my suggesting that we drink fine wine until standing becomes challenging, said she has just the place. I thought I had just the place because I was in the mood for my favorite zin, and that can only be obtained at one of Emeril’s restaurants due to a contract with the winemaker, but she insisted. ...

Dudes in costumes playing Magic the Gathering. Jesus I’m stoked. All kidding aside, starting this Friday and running through Sunday, the 2007 Las Vegas Renaissance Festival is going on at Sunset Park. It’s $10 per person per day or $25 if you’re bored and have the stamina and/or will to go for all three days. Coincidentally, we’re in preparations to start our new Las Vegas video podcast and will be out at at the festival on Friday shooting some film, probably eating turkey legs, and most definitely drinking beer. To actually make the day fun, in the spirit of The Three Musketeers (the movie,) we’re going wenching! Look for our camera crew in the park and come entertain our readers. Viewer participation is strongly encouraged!

I just got back from dinner about thirty minutes ago and of all the reasons why I call Las Vegas home, the air out here – tonight – is high up on the list. As I recently wrote, “Magical Weather Week” changes everything around here, weather-wise. The highs this week are the very low nineties, which might sound hot, but for the dry air, it’s great. You are still comfortable enough outside to go to the pool all day and then as the sun goes down, you just want to change into some jeans and stay outside.. goof around on your laptop on the Internet (if you’ve got Wi-Fi kicking and stuff.) Later this week I’ve got a big crew of ...

There are a lot of changes in the works for “While Las Vegas Sleeps” at present. My annual summer trip to visit friends and family in Texas has proved to be very good for near-term plans for our site here. Some things I’ve been planning on doing for a while now are just about to start happening, so I’m really excited. My friend Kelly from Houston took the drive back from Houston to Las Vegas with me and we took the slightly-longer-but-completely-worth it northern route home – the I-40 (old Route 66) way. You can get to the Texas Gulf Coast faster by traveling down I-10, but it’s just nowhere near so beautiful. Once you get to Amarillo and state highway 287 joins I-40, the drive becomes interesting. There’s the ...

Okay, it’s true: I don’t believe in luck. Big time superstitions – even small, insidious ones – can be the undoing of any gambler, but mostly, I have always been big on mathematics and science and not so much on defying the inevitable. The law of large numbers is on your side, so long as you’re gambling with an edge. I’ve seen that principle in practice so many times, if I have a “belief,” it’s in the math. There are some very troubling mathematics and probability issues surrounding marriage today. Well, it’s not a new problem, but it seems to be a very consistent one – I’m sure that everyone has the same impression about marriage, more or less: the odds of any marriage working out for the long term ...

Last week my little nephew was in town visiting from Houston. He’s been coming out the last few summers to stay with me for a week or so and I always like to take him on a little trip. In the past we’ve gone camping up on Mount Charleston, gone to Disneyland and the Santa Monica beach.. that sort of thing. This time I thought we’d go up to a place I’ve wanted to visit for a number of years and never got around to going to for whatever reason, a place a little Cub Scout could definitely appreciate – Zion Canyon National Park. Zion Canyon, obviously renamed to its current moniker by religious folk, has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. It’s a truly beautiful area to ...

Starting tomorrow, I’m going to begin a series of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” that will just sort of happen upon occasion, most likely after I’ve recently visited one of the places I will have written about. I’ve been meaning to do this for some time but I am going to make an effort to do so effective immediately. Las Vegas, Nevada is a lot things. It’s obviously the gaming capital of the world and that is just about all that most people know about Las Vegas. That definitely does influence most everything in the town to some degree, what with so many movie theaters or restaurants inside of casinos or shopping adjoining the resorts in their smaller, more upscale malls. All the local bars, of course, have gaming ...

Places you go in life are just places until something happens there. After that the place is special, it has memories. It doesn’t have be something good, necessarily. Something tragic will definitely make the place stand out in your mind and you won’t soon forget it. When something good happens, though, it makes the place very special, indeed, and when change happens, you can’t help but be nostalgic. I fell in love once over some Viale Lemonades. She was and is a very special girl, but we don’t talk anymore. You might have read me mention or if you know me in person heard me speak of these infamous Viale Lemonades before. They’ve appeared in at least a couple of articles on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” before.. Here and over ...
