I did take a look at the photographer's website - ATI Photography - and I saw a number of photos that really caught my attention. It showed a very artistic approach to photography that I like and is often very difficult to find in Las Vegas photographers, apart from those photographers that work for magazines and come at a very, very high price.

The night is still young, even if I were to judge by another city’s standards, but the guy being placed into my taxi must have started drinking at some point before noon. The girl mothering him is, surprisingly, not his mother… they seem to be about the same age. She tells me to take them to the Palms and almost immediately notices the camera attached to the windshield. I explain that the camera footage is only reviewed when something happens, but I get the feeling that most people don’t believe me when I say this. Most people probably also don’t realize that, on any given day, there are thousands of taxicabs on the roads in Las Vegas and that the cars only stop running long enough for the next driver ...

A lot of people have complained over the past couple of years that Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport does not have free Wi-Fi connections for laptops computers, iPods and iPhones, et cetera. I’ve personally felt a bit nonplussed about these gripes, because while a few airports do offer free Wi-Fi connections, many, many airports around the world charge, and charge through the nose, at that. Las Vegas is a world class city catering to a very international clientele so it definitely makes sense for them to open up the wi-fi connections to everyone for their use for free. Well, I’m not sure when it happened, but I’m currently writing from McCarran Airport via the airport’s free wifi system. Cheers to the powers that be! It’s just one more little ...

“While Las Vegas Sleeps…” has always been about stories about Las Vegas, from the very beginning. It always will be. It’s not just about hearsay or conjecture. It’s about personal mileage. The way I live my life, well, I’m something of a student of Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo journalism philosophy of telling stories: Go where the story is, interact with it on its terms, and become the story. We’re in the middle of a redesign of the site that I’ve been planning for some time – it has been long-coming, due to my need to remediate myself in the ways of modern web design. I’ve been promising this for over a year, I realize, but the fact is, every time I’ve learned something that I needed to to make it ...

I screwed up last year. I slept on an opportunity to join a kickball team with some friends (some of which have since moved out of Vegas, as people tend to do, sometimes.) This year I didn’t hear anything about the league starting up amongst friends so, naturally, I did nothing. For some, adults playing kickball might seem like a silly diversion from life in Sin City. Well, pfffft to that shit. Kickball was the second best physical education sport in school, second only to Dodgeball. Now, it’s true that Kickball doesn’t have the genius marketing team of Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller on their side – “If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball…” – but what Kickball lacks in marketing it makes up for with ...

Metro needs your help tracking down a sexual assault suspect. They say a man attacked someone at a Strip hotel early Saturday morning. Investigators say the man is armed and dangerous. They describe him as a white male, in his mid-30s with brown hair and a goatee. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555. Wow.
Okay, sure, I’m just playing into the general perspective people have about Las Vegas’ architectural heritage (or lack thereof,) but it is true that things tend to get built, used, aged, and torn down around here. It’s nice to see other cities repurposing older buildings for new, more modern uses. We’re definitely an anomaly as far as the primary reason for growth goes and that will, of course, cause things to be developed and redeveloped in rather conspicuous ways, but surely everything need not be demolished entirely, right? That sure seems reasonable to me, and when the buildings in question happen to be owned by the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, or are local Federally-owned property, I think it’s a lot easier for them to justify redevelopment, as individual ...

When most people hear the phrase “monsoon season” they think of the famously rainy monsoons of India that they learned about in school. What’s really odd to me is how they always teach about “monsoons” in the context of some very foreign place to North America – there are monsoonal weather patterns every single year right here in the Southwest to learn about. I know that kids can “get” an illustration of a concept by examples of extremes – and it definitely rains like crazy in India during monsoon season, oftentimes causing flooding, et cetera – but those conditions, while perhaps not as widespread and extreme, occur right here in Las Vegas, Nevada, and much of the desert southwest. So what is a monsoon, you ask? It’s really just a ...

REJOICE! Okay, maybe we won’t rejoice, but seriously, the Star Trek: The Experience attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton is one of the few remaining un-niceties at the venerable old hotel and just doesn’t fit (and never did.) They have been working pretty diligently to restore some luster and reinvigorate the property for the last few years, and when you walk into a Hilton, you just don’t expect to see uber-nerd cheese as part of the whole ambience – it was killing the vibe they are working on reclaiming. Now I am not saying that I don’t like Star Trek. In fact, I used to watch The Next Generation regularly when I was younger and it was in early syndication, sometimes seeing the same episodes multiple times. I love the ...

I spent Saturday afternoon out in Pahrump, Nevada, at the Sin City Chamber of Commerce’s annual picnic, chili cook-off, and hoe-down (it’s at the Chicken Ranch, so, har-har!) and I was very, very tired when I made it home to Vegas Saturday night. I took a shower to wash off the day, ate some spring rolls and some pho tai nam (which is like my favorite comfort food,) and was asleep just as the sun was setting. It was great for me, actually, because I’ve been experiencing some pretty serious, ass-kicking insomnia. So I woke up on Sunday morning at like 6am, all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and wanting to get out, enjoy the day, and have some breakfast… There isn’t one on my end of town, but I definitely do ...

Outside of my taxi there’s a man screaming obscenities at his friends… or at least the ease with which he insults them implies a long and deep friendship with the group of assholes that just won’t get into the cab fast enough. When they finally get to the taxi it is immediately apparent that this is the most unusual group of people that I’ve ever driven around: the original yelling man looks kind of like Kyle McLachlan …if he was on a diet consisting entirely of cheese. The woman that he lets into the front seat between us looks exactly like Mama Fratelli from the Goonies, and the beefy, high-school football player-looking guy that gets into the back, is apparently her son. He is sitting on one side of a ...

There is probably a slicker, less eyebrow-raising name for what is going on between Nevada and a few other states, including, but probably not limited to, Utah. I was raised in an era and in a country that seems to be a different place in many respects, nowadays. There was a time when, for instance, if you had a ticket from some three horse town in another part of your own state, it was up to you and that jurisdiction to work out the payment. It was not going to affect you where you lived unless the ticket happened to have been state police. That was to protect citizens from small towns using speed traps as a way to raise local money at the expense of people traveling on roads ...
