My Grand Canyon Skywalk Tour
How much money do you take with you when you go out to the middle of the desert? $25? $50? If you happen to go out to Grand Canyon West and walk on the Grand Canyon Skywalk make sure you’ve saved up. Because donning little white booties and walking on thick glass with nothing between you and the 800 feet below — it’s going to cost you.
Like most people from Las Vegas would do, we just drove out there, and we were stopped and told there that we had to buy a package. Before that, we thought we could just drive right out to the Skywalk and pay there and walk, but that wasn’t the case. So after driving for a couple of hours, and then tacking on an extra twenty miles of dirt road, we got stopped and abruptly told to park. Then, in the middle of nowhere, is where we were informed we were on a Hualapai Indian Reservation. Because we were on their territory, it suddenly became a whole other game.
Guest Column: Nick the Ex-Cabbie – “Downtown Detective Story”
I can hear John Waters on the television in the next room and it seems like a really interesting show…something I’d really like to watch. Unfortunately, right now I’m crouched on the floor of the restroom with my new porcelain friend. How did I end up in this situation? Perhaps I should reexamine my evening and use my detective skills to figure it out.
We start out with a drink at the Griffin. The bartendress pours me an entire shot when I ask to sample “just a tiny bit” of the unusual vodka that I’ve never seen before. This becomes my second drink and we have one more round before leaving. I don’t know if the shot ended up on the tab, but I know it puts me one drink ahead of everyone else in the group. Extra shot, ftw!

Wine Ratings
Over the past few years I’ve grown really frustrated with the state of wine ratings and wine scoring in general. 100 point wine scales seem to have lost their meaning as wine tasting “experts” feel both internal and external pressures to give wines undeservedly high scores.
As it turns out, the original purpose for changing our wine scoring from the original 20 point European-style wine rating system to our current 100 point wine ratings scale was to give more nuance and variation in scoring. This purpose has all been eroded, though, since you see so many 90 point scores giving for wines that are clearly average at best.
A few months ago I finally published what I think is the best wine ratings system available and it’s also one that everyone can use because it gives meaning to the scores, rather than just grabbing a number out of thin air (or from somewhere else, as seems to be the regular practice.)
Guest Column: Nick the Cabbie – “Pink and Purple”
The two girls in the back seat are dressed almost identically with short little skirts and hats…except one of them is predominantly purple and the other is the Sheriff of Pinktown. And, in case you weren’t aware, things are not okay in Pinktown. There must have been a jailbreak or something, but I think she’d be crying if her Deputy had been killed. Maybe it’s only cattle rustlers…or maybe she’s cold and heartless. It’s difficult to tell sometimes. (They don’t give me enough information to work with so I’m purely speculating, of course. I’m sure you understand.)
