Anyone who knows me knows I’m constantly complaining about the lack of culture in Las Vegas. Every “community event” that I’ve gone to has been so sadly thrown together that I never go again. Even the long standing community event First Friday has lost all of its luster for me. I’d rather stay home and watch a movie than maneuver my way through all the hipsters to get to the two artists that I like.

A few months ago, a savior in the form of an awesome community event appeared: The Fabulous Sin City Roller Derby. Now this is the point where I should tell you what year it first started, how far they’ve come, et cetera… but I’m not going to do that. As far as I’m concerned they didn’t exist before I found them. They materialized out of a fog, because if they hadn't, it would kill the magic.

The Burlesque Hall of Fame is going on in Las Vegas this weekend at The Orleans Hotel and Casino. There are going to be dozens and dozens of classic burlesque performers as well as a ton of new burlesque talent keeping an old style of sexy entertainment alive and well for our generation. Tickets are on sale on The Orleans website. I’m looking at Burlesque Hall of Fame’s website at the moment. I’ve never seen so many pasties! Granted, they aren’t required at most adult establishments these days, but it makes me think… There’s something really missing from modern day adult entertainment… starting with real performance, costuming, and, well, enthusiasm for what they are doing! I’ve known a handful of adult dancers that wanted to make an attempt at featured ...

They Just Don’t Make ‘em Like They Used To… Tonight marked the last public performance of the Folies Bergère at the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The show had an almost fifty year-long run at the resort and has seen some unimaginable changes here in town. I was happy I was able to get a couple of tickets at a two person table in the center for one of tonight’s two performances. Las Vegas’ topless showgirl and variety performance shows are definitely a dying breed in Las Vegas. It seems that producers don’t really know what will work well here in town, and as a result, when they find something that is working, they just try to duplicate that as often as they can, rather than really putting ...

I have to confess: it’s been too damned long since I’ve been out clubbing. I’ve been working, somewhat feverishly, on a business project involving multiple websites and I just haven’t been able to take the breaks that I require of myself to go out. Why? Oh, because I drink like a fish, and as a result, one night turns into two or three days of seriously reduced productivity. Sooooo… Tiffany hit me up today and wanted to go out – neither of us had really be “out” since my birthday back in October, so I couldn’t hardly resist. Working in Las Vegas’ traditional industry tends to mean getting off and starting your “evening” at slightly odd hours – nothing new there – so until Tiff got off tonight arounde 1:30AM, ...

This time each year, soon after the weather has changed and it’s just so damned nice you want to be outside all of the time, Las Vegas Bike Fest hits town and no matter where you go you see an unusual number of bikes on the prowl around town. I’ve never really gone down to the shows to check them out, although I’ve always admired a sexy-looking chopper, myself. The Las Vegas Bike Fest is apparently a somewhat diffuse event, with different parts of it spread out over town. The event I was most interested in checking out was the custom bike show, which takes place on the Saturday of the event during the day down on Fremont Street. I went out there for an hour or so and took ...

It’s not just about hearsay or conjecture. It’s about personal mileage. The way I live my life, well, I’m something of a student of Hunter S. Thompson’s gonzo journalism philosophy of telling stories: Go where the story is, interact with it on its terms, and become the story. We’re in the middle of a redesign of the site that I’ve been planning for some time – it has been long-coming, due to my need to remediate myself in the ways of modern web design. I’ve been promising this for over a year, I realize, but the fact is, every time I’ve learned something that I needed to to make it ...

This English guy has been talking about how much trouble he’s going to be in during the entire trip to his hotel. The entire trip to his hotel…from the strip club. The three remaining passengers offer to go up to his room, wake the sleeping wife and help fabricate a believable story, but, for some strange reason, he politely declines their generosity. “We’ve got to get some rest anyway,” one of them says, “but don’t worry, we’ll come visit you in England. You’re going to see us again sooner than you really want to.” “Yeah, we’ve booked the same flight. We’ll be going home with you.” They all laugh and the car door closes. As soon as he’s out of sight, though, the next destination changes. “Take us to the ...

The World Series of Poker’s Main Event – the $10,000 buy-in No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament that bears the title of World Champion – kicks off today with the first of four “Day One’s.” There are so many players in this monster of a tournament nowadays that they simply can not hope to fit them all into one space on the same day so they just break it down into multiple first days. A tournament this huge generates a lot of stress and strain and just making it through the first day is a huge accomplishment unto itself. With that in mind, Dorothy Kamaka, Las Vegas local poker player, card dealer, and all-around sweetheart, has put together – along with a little help from her friends – an event to ...
