Las Vegas Roller Derby GirlsAnyone who knows me knows I’m constantly complaining about the lack of culture in Las Vegas. Every “community event” that I’ve gone to has been so sadly thrown together that I never go again. Even the long standing community event First Friday has lost all of its luster for me. I’d rather stay home and watch a movie than maneuver my way through all the hipsters to get to the two artists that I like.

A few months ago, a savior in the form of an awesome community event appeared: The Fabulous Sin City Roller Derby. Now this is the point where I should tell you what year it first started, how far they’ve come, et cetera… but I’m not going to do that. As far as I’m concerned they didn’t exist before I found them. They materialized out of a fog, because if they hadn’t, it would kill the magic.

I just picked up a couple in front of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and the vibe that they are giving off is really strange. I would guess that they’ve probably been at Drai’s because they’re dressed up and the girl looks really tired. Aside from the initial directions they haven’t said a word to each other (or me) since they got in the cab, but it doesn’t seem like they’ve been fighting or anything. I usually find it rather strange when it happens, but people frequently act as if they’re in some sort of automated conveyance – I might as well be a robot for all the notice I’m given. Though, I must admit, sometimes I prefer it. I let them sit in silence.

I can hear John Waters on the television in the next room and it seems like a really interesting show…something I’d really like to watch. Unfortunately, right now I’m crouched on the floor of the restroom with my new porcelain friend. How did I end up in this situation? Perhaps I should reexamine my evening and use my detective skills to figure it out.

We start out with a drink at the Griffin. The bartendress pours me an entire shot when I ask to sample “just a tiny bit” of the unusual vodka that I’ve never seen before. This becomes my second drink and we have one more round before leaving. I don’t know if the shot ended up on the tab, but I know it puts me one drink ahead of everyone else in the group. Extra shot, ftw!

martini-girlFour score and… okay who am I kidding, in 2006, I started my little Las Vegas blog on WordPress.com, not realizing at the time that it would be much better to have my own domain and the freedom that comes with it.  Not very long after that I moved to my own domain, here on WhileLasVegasSleeps.com, and here we have remained with the same sad, ugly ass blog theme since day 1.1.

I realize I’ve been promising – unfilled promises, yes – that there were changes a-coming to my blog site, complete with a new, branded look, a podcast, video, free booze and all sorts of fun.  Well the time is nigh, my friends!
