Whatever Shall We Do? (Without Star Trek at the Hilton)
REJOICE! Okay, maybe we won’t rejoice, but seriously, the Star Trek: The Experience attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton is one of the few remaining un-niceties at the venerable old hotel and just doesn’t fit (and never did.) They have been working pretty diligently to restore some luster and reinvigorate the property for the last few years, and when you walk into a Hilton, you just don’t expect to see uber-nerd cheese as part of the whole ambience – it was killing the vibe they are working on reclaiming.
Now I am not saying that I don’t like Star Trek. In fact, I used to watch The Next Generation regularly when I was younger and it was in early syndication, sometimes seeing the same episodes multiple times. I love the Star Trek movies and I am really looking forward to J.J. Abrams’ take on the Star Trek universe with the next film that’s being released in May 2009 (I’m a huge Lost fan and J.J. Abrams is one of the creators and an executive producer of that show.)
So, yeah, I’m not a stranger to geeking out in sci-fi adventure fashion. As much as I can get down with that, I get down much, much more to the glamor and glitz that Las Vegas represents and the posh that a major Las Vegas property should be, particularly with the name Las Vegas Hilton, and especially when it is in the midst of trying to fix some problems with poor judgment it displayed in the past. So that’s why I wasn’t sad to read a Las Vegas Review-Journal article saying that the lease the company has that produces the Star Trek: The Experience attraction is nearing the end of its ten year term and that it doesn’t look like it will be renewed. Time to move on, guys… Live long and prosper.
(I think the guys I know that come out for DefCon during the first week in August will surely be having one last Star Trek: The Experience meet-up in Quark’s Bar, because that’s a supergeek tradition they share and this summer would be the last chance for that one…)

It will be interesting to see what the Hilton decides to make of the Star Trek Experience area. I’m hoping for less of the live long and prosper vibe myself

I was a fan of the Star Trek exhibit (maybe one of the few), but I do agree with the hotel about it needing an overhaul. Do we have any ideas what’s going to be put in its’ place? Maybe a “Over the Top” theme with Sylvester Stalone playing “Lincoln Hawk” armwrestling in the lobby would be cool… he needs a job. Oh yeah… with large semi-trucks in the parking lot.
