Desert Rain
It’s so precious when it happens, so rare. As a person that grew up in a very tropical environment (the Texas Gulf Coast,) “bad weather” was something that most people felt they just had to deal with. I was an odd one. I’ve always had this almost unusual affinity for water in general, rain showers for sure, and thunderstorms in particular. The more intense and violent the storm, the more positive and calm the feeling I get from it.
It’s not simply the water, but there is something that feels almost cleansing from a rain storm. They say that thunderstorms bring a balance to the ionic state in the atmosphere and that is what causes the sense of inner calm after a storm, as animals, including humans, tend to be more jittery beforehand due to a build-up of too many positive ions in the air. The storm releases massive amounts of negative ions, and voila… sweet, gentle stasis.
The average person, though, doesn’t seem to “get it” when I make a comment about sincerely longing, wishing for a real storm. That’s supposed to be bad. I think that I just get something more from it than most people.. either that or thunderstorms are one of life’s little peculiar flowers that not a lot of people take the time to stop and smell. They dread it while I’ve flown to other places, in part, because I had high hopes that a storm would blow through while I was visiting.
I love living in Las Vegas. The weather here is amazing, the people interesting, the experiences more frequent, unusual, and exciting than just about anywhere I can imagine. If there is one thing I miss, though, it’s those unbelievable Texas thunderstorms.
The morning started over with a number of looming clouds covering the valley floor, masking much of the mountains to the north and west. The forecast for rain was 40% chance during the day and 60% chance tonight. Since then, the sun has peeked out a time or two and the forecast has been lowered to only 40% chance tonight and not likely at all for today. It’s like the rain gods are toying with me, and on such a day as this.. I really could use a nice, long thunderstorm.
If you know a rain dance, get after it.

We had some serious storms blow through late last week. Unfortunately it caused some tornadoes to touch down as well as baseball sized hail up in DFW, but from Waco south all we got was a nice hour or so of lighting, rolling thunder, and heavy rain. Here in Austin, it was bliss.
