Last Night at Revolution Lounge
Last night my buddy Alex who is on staff over at Revolution Lounge called me doing some new promotions for the club and asked us to come out. We went in about 12:30 and it was pretty slow for a Wednesday, but this has been a bit of a strange week as far as traffic goes.
The place is neat-o. The entry way is a series of three dimensional letters that say, well, “Revolution.” You just walk right through the letters like you’re on Zoom from PBS back in the day. Very interesting entrance, this one, and I always appreciate things like that because it sets a vibe for the rest of the night (this is one big reason why bouncers with attitudes and unbelievably long lines make for sucky nights when clubbing.) So we go right on in and look the place over. It’s very “new retro” looking inside, with a reinvented 60′s theme going on, right in line with The Beatles Love show it accompanies at the Mirage.
For an ultralounge, it is a bit big, which always underscores a small turnout for a night, but Alex had us taken care of with some comped drink tickets and we headed to the bar happy with the interesting surroundings. Let me just say that I drink a lot of martinis and I had one of the best cosmopolitans I’ve had in quite awhile.
As Liz, Nick, and myself kind of danced around the place with our drinks, I was enjoying the happy, fun vibe of the place when I noticed that some of the beautiful video projections on the walls were made of flowers, leaves, and other organic-looking artwork and the individual bits of art were spelling some things out.. People had written positive messages and had done the digital equivalent of carving your initials with your lover’s and a heart in the middle of a tree – CSC <3′s EAB, et cetera. It was a really nice touch.
A few moments later I realized that this was, in fact, interactivity that was happening from around the club. On the tables in front of the booths there are motion-controlled video projections that are “smart” and do neat things, a few of which I’ve seen before, such as when you sit your drink on the table little bits of animation follow the drink around. The thing that was super nice about these projections was the accuracy and detail that it had and the way you can interact with it so easily. I watched one girl drawing as though her table was an Etch-A-Sketch or digital chalkboard. She would make little pictures and designs with her hands. It was the kind of child-like thing that just makes you smile, all in an adult playground. I love that kind of stuff. The world needs more places that are beautiful and neat – just because.
We left after a little bit to meet up with a friend at Tabu, but we will definitely come back again (especially with the great hospitality!) As we left and said goodbye, Alex was wiping a table with a cloth. The spots where glasses had previously been still had the animation bits that had accumulated left “on the table.” He was making sure the table was clean but as he wiped it down, the bits of light reacted as though they were debris and moved just ahead of his rag and off the table, with a big happy 60′s-looking flower circling his hand all the while. It’s almost magical the way those animations subtley interact with you there, as if you were in part life, part animation…
