I’ve recently had to endure some unbelievably bad experiences with a web developer I hired for a web project I’ve been planning for some time. The guy claimed to be able to move mountains with PHP and MySQL, but I don’t think he moved his finger twice in two weeks to work on the project. Today he says he thinks he’s changed his mind and is just going to “refund my money” - this is after wasting my time, money, energy, and nerves.
You wouldn’t believe the nerve of this individual if I told told you half of the story, but let’s just suffice it to say that with his unimaginable attitude and demeanor, I think he is going to find himself having a tough time getting along well in the business community here in Las Vegas. He’d be better off to cut his losses quickly and move back to where he came from. This town is too small to screw people around like this and expect to get away with it. …And to think I was the guy’s first client in Las Vegas.
If anyone reading my blog has a web project and is considering hiring a developer, please let me know who you are considering and I will let you know if it is this guy or not. I’m not going to post a link to his website on here because that would only help drive traffic to him through Google by my blog linking to him. Just be wary of hiring developers and email me personally if you are considering doing so.
Lastly… if anyone knows a good web developer skilled in PHP, MySQL, and preferably experienced with Gallery2 and Drupal, please let know who they are and how to get a hold of them.
Mama said there’d be days like this…

Feeling a bit under the weather yesterday afternoon, due to a bit of the ol’ cocktail flu, I decided to drive out to Goodsprings, Nevada with Nick the Good to have a beer at the old Pioneer Saloon
I don’t think that Nick’s been south out of the Las Vegas Valley in the few months he’s been living here, so this was a nice little outing, though it’s just a short 20 mile drive or so. I’d been out to see the Pioneer Saloon once before but it was a little early in the afternoon and it wasn’t yet open. Yesterday we showed up and things were a little different altogether…
Apparently
around the first part of the weekend, a driver, not drunk but terribly sleepy, came around the corner on the road in from Jean and passed out at the wheel, careening off of the road and taking out the porch and entry way to the nearly 100 years-old saloon.
As we got out of the car and headed towards the entrance, a couple of guys were out front and had been working on rebuilding the damaged area. Before we got to the front door they were explaining to us what all the construction was about and pointing to the red car across the street. Apparently the driver of the car, which as you can see from this photo was completely wrecked, got out of the car with not so much as a scratch on him. Pretty amazing, though now I really wish that I’d had my camera when I was out there in Goodsprings before because the original look of the place is now changed forever, alas…

Nick and I went inside after talking to the guys out front for a minute and taking a couple of quick photos. We met Sandy, the super-friendly bartendress who listed off about 20 beers they had by the bottle. I chose a Blue Moon, because that’s just what I was in the mood for. We drank most of our beers at the bar talking with our hostess and then walked around, surveying all the old news clippings and photos with movie stars and dvds next to production stills from films the bar was featured in. The place has a lot of history and I just like having a cold one in a place that has the sort of walls that people like to muse about - “if they could only talk…”

Before we left, Sandy - rather excitedly - told us about the Pioneer Saloon’s annual chili cook-off that’s going on this Saturday, April 28th. She said that she’ll be trying to sell us t-shirts and raffle tickets but the event is free and you can sample all of the cooking, et cetera. The place is a living classic and not a lot of people know about it so I wanted to mention the chili cook-off on “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” and help them get some newcomers this weekend.
Here’s to another 100 years at the old Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, Nevada!

The changes at The Palms Hotel and Casino, with the exception of the new condominium tower, are now complete. The last change in the process was the completion and opening of The Pearl on Saturday night, featuring a live performance by Gwen Stefani and appearances by a number of celebrities.
We’d promised some photos from the red carpet at the event. Unfortunately, the red carpet at this event was a staged area inside of the ballroom next to The Pearl and since we didn’t know that ahead of time we hadn’t requested proper press credentials, alas. At special celebrity events there in the past, such as CineVegas, the red carpet has been a very open affair. I’m sort of kicking my own ass for that one, but we did enjoy drinks and stealing the Maloofs’ shrimp cocktail in The Mint Lounge. I mean, yeah, it was completely cheap of us but they looked so good and Papa and Son Maloof only eaten like one of them.. they were the biggest shrimp I’ve had in a long time!
It really was all Princess Elizabeth’s fault! We were all drinking some bad ass martinis and they came in with three ladies and taunted us with their seafood by not even eating it, then left to go do who knows what. They just sat there, talking to us.. “eat me.. I’m so cold and delicious.. I’m all alone with no one to enjoy me… I’m good with cocktail sauce.. ” Elizabeth was tipsy and thought how wonderful an idea this was. So before you know it, she, Nick the Good, and myself had cleaned the platter! Thanks Misters Maloof! We love your shrimp and your Hotel-Casino!
The place is looking really good, though. This isn’t the first time that I’ve gone to the Palms and just hung out drinking in The Mint Lounge. Britney makes some really good cocktails and is cute to boot! (tell her Christopher from While Las Vegas Sleeps… sent you!) They’ve recently opened the new Bistro Buffet there. Smells good, but I don’t do buffets very often. I’ll give it a shot at some point, though, I’m sure. I’m not sure exactly when the condo tower will be complete, but they are making a lot of progress on it. They’ve also begun building some elevated connecting walkway from the new tower to the side casino entrance near the theater. This city is perpetually under construction, ala a webpage from 1996, but I’d love to see a lot of completion soon. *crosses fingers*
