The time we’ve all been anxiously awaiting since then end of last September is finally almost upon us: April 29th, 2007. Yes, that’s right - opening day of Rehab 2007. I don’t have any information on who is playing opening weekend, but it hardly mattes - everyone around here I know has mentioned it and the party’ll be off the hook if a Vegas lounge act headlines doing Milli Vanilli covers (is that redundant?) So here’s a little reminder to start shopping for boardshorts or just the right bit of gyno-floss… the Las Vegas your mother warned you about is about to arrive in all its splendor!
I’m curious about the weather for opening Sunday at the Hard Rock Hotel’s pool.. Weather.com says that the annual average high temperature for April 29th is 82 degrees. It might be a titty bit nipply, but we’ll manage. The hot tubs will be full
Along with the normal weekly postings of photos from the pool and other clubs around town you see on various websites, we’re going to be launching a free service so that you can post your own Las Vegas-related photo albums and easily link to your pics from MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, et cetera.. those details will be coming shortly.
Saturday night we met up with a couple of friends and went out dancing after hours. They’ve made a few changes at Drai’s recently. They’ve added a second area in the back of the club near the back bar that features hip hop. This makes for a much less crowded main dance floor as people tend to circulate more and some stay in the back that would normally be in the front.
The hotel itself, formerly the Barbary Coast, as changed it’s name under new ownership to Bill’s Gambling Hall and Saloon (really went all out on that name, didn’t they?) They’ve changed some signage out but as far as I can tell that’s about all they have changed. I can’t help but think that this is not a long-range plan for Barbary, uh, Bill’s Gambling Hall. You would think that a property on one of the most expensive street corners in the world (Flamingo and the Las Vegas Strip) would get some serious build-out and a world-class boutique hotel and casino (for the size of the property) at least. Way to go, Harrah’s. Hopefully this is temporary and they have bigger, better plans for the next few years.
Later in the morning stops were made at Empire and Seamless. Good crowds, both, and a great time was had by all.
The Stardust Hotel was imploded while I was out of the country in Europe, but Splice was able to get my camera and get out there in the middle of the night to shoot it from a good vantage point. When I first got home last week I was sick, thus the delay in getting the thing edited and ready to put on the site here, but I think you might find that it was worth the wait… This might very well be the best video of the implosion yet! Here’s why:
This video has the entire demolition including:
- the complete fireworks display
- the countdown on the building
- the implosion itself
** plus **
- the implosion in REVERSE
- the implosion in SLOW MOTION!
So check it out and let me know what you think. Feel free to share a link to my blog with a friend so they can check it out too Also, you’ll want to check back regularly for weekly pictures and the occasional video of all the Rehab shenanigans which will commence on April 29th >:P
What a month this has been for me… After a few weeks in London and Paris I managed to come home with some unbelievable British head cold that just wouldn’t let go. Upon blogosphere re-entry, I’ve managed to (mostly) complete a process I began just before falling off the grid - installing and configuring the new, permanent site for “While Las Vegas Sleeps…” - http://www.whilelasvegassleeps.com - and I’m about 90% of the way there.
More to follow soon, including what might very well be the best video shot of the the demolition of the Stardust Hotel and Casino, shot by our very own roving reporting and one-man camera crew, Secret Undersea City.
